...WINTRY WEATHER EXPECTED TONIGHT AND MONDAY...

.A low pressure system moving across northwest Wisconsin will
produce a period of snow late tonight into the day Monday. The 
snow could mix with sleet and freezing rain in some areas before 
changing to rain from south to north late tonight into Monday. The
wintry precipitation will make for hazardous travel conditions in
most places early Monday. In addition to the wintry precipitation,
gusty east to southeast winds will develop overnight into Monday
allowing for some blowing and drifting of snow. Sustained winds of
20 to 30 mph may gust up to 40 mph overnight through Monday
morning.

Forecast discussion for routine afternoon forecast issuance

.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Monday
Issued at 243 PM CST Sun Jan 6 2019

The notable changes to the forecast include upgrading Forest,
Florence and northern sections of Marinette and Oconto Counties
to a winter storm warning. Did drop Waushara County from the
winter weather advisory.

Upper trough approaching from the west will bring mixed
precipitation to the area later tonight and Monday. Models
showing strong 850mb warm advection as 60 to 65 knot low level
jet cranks up later this evening and overnight. This strong surge
of warm air will cause problems with precipitation type forecasts
across central into east-central Wisconsin before changing over
to rain later tonight into early Monday morning. Surface
temperatures will climb above freezing and 850mb temperatures
climb to or a few degrees above 0C. This surge of warm air is
problematic with current headlines in place as numerical guidance
has much of the area south of highway 29 climbing into the middle
30s to near 40 by 12z Monday morning. Per coordination with NWS
La Crosse, will let current headlines run to their current
expiration time. Feeling is the midnight shift or the day shift
maybe able to cancel early. It appears there will be a sharp
gradient in snowfall amounts with less than an inch south of
Highway 10. 1 to 3 inches is expected from Highway 10 to south of
a Mosinee to Shawano to Marinette line. Over the far north, 3 to
6 inches of snow is expected with locally higher amounts are
possible across Forest, Florence, and northern sections of
Marinette and Oconto Counties. The heaviest snowfall rates are
expected late tonight into early Monday morning.

The snow will change over to rain from south to north on Monday
as warm air moves into the region. Highs on Monday may reach the
middle 40s across east-central Wisconsin.

.LONG TERM...Monday Night Through Sunday
Issued at 243 PM CST Sun Jan 6 2019

The main forecast concerns will be precipitation chances and
lake-effect potential from Monday night into Wednesday night.

A potent short-wave trof will brush the southern part of the
forecast area late Monday night into Tuesday morning, and may
bring an inch of snow to our southern tier of counties. After the
short-wave exits, CAA and subsidence will result in windy
conditions, with gusts to 30 to 40 mph over parts of central and
east central WI.

Cold northwest to north-northwest flow will lead to lake-effect
snow showers Tuesday night into Wednesday night. Several inches of
snow can be expected over Vilas county before the lake-effect
winds down Wednesday night.

An inverted surface trof will move through the region Friday into
Saturday, and bring a chance of snow showers. Quieter conditions
should prevail for the latter half of the weekend.

Mild tuemperature on Tuesday will give way to slightly below
normal readings for the latter half of the work week, followed by
a return to slightly above normal temperatures over the weekend.

The next system will approach from the west this afternoon. As the
system approaches, low level wind shear is expected to increase to
50 to 60 knots late this evening into Monday morning. Snow is
expected to arrive across portions of central and north-central
Wisconsin late this evening or early on Monday, then across the
region early Monday morning. The snow is expected to transition
to rain, freezing rain or sleet before changing over to rain.
It should be primarily snow across the north, with some rain
later Monday morning into Monday afternoon. VFR CIGS will drop
into the IFR category or lower later tonight and continue
through much of Monday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for north-central and northeast
Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Travel conditions will become hazardous after midnight as a storm
system brings rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain to the area.
The worst conditions are expected generally north of Highway 10.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Sunday

Hazardous travel conditions are likely in most areas Monday
morning, but the precipitation will change to rain from south to
north during the day. A total snow accumulation of 3 to 6 inches
is expected north of a Wausau to Marinette to Washington Island
line, with up to 7 inches across portions of Forest, Florence,
and northern sections of Marinette and Oconto Counties. 1 to 3
inches of snow is expected further south, with less than an inch
expected south of a Wisconsin Rapids to Appleton to Algoma line.

Strong southeast winds late tonight into Monday may result in ice
shoves on the west shore of Lake Winnebago, and on the bayshore
from Pensaukee to Marinette.

MInor snow accumulations of an inch or less will impact parts of
central and east-central Wisconsin Tuesday morning, and may result
in locally hazardous travel conditions for the morning commute.

Lake-effect snow showers will affect Vilas county Tuesday night
through Wednesday night, and bring several inches of
accumulation to the northwest part of the county.
