Forecast discussion for routine afternoon forecast issuance

.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Wednesday
Issued at 241 PM CDT Tue Oct 15 2019

Scattered showers and thunderstorms continued across the region
this afternoon. Some of the storms brought small hail less than
one inch in diameter to several locations. Temperatures ranged
from around 40 across the far north to the lower to middle 50s
far south.

For tonight, any thunderstorm activity will end by early this
evening. A closed upper low is expected to drop southeast across
the  area, bringing another round of showers this evening, then
lingering showers across much of the area into Wednesday morning.
The big story will be the winds later tonight. Winds are expected
to shift to the northwest at 15 to 30 mph with higher gusts. The
winds will be even stronger across Door County due to deeper
mixing over the warmer waters of the Bay of Green Bay. The windy
conditions will continue through much of Wednesday, then subside
later Wednesday afternoon. Based on bufkit soundings, winds become
favorable for wind gusts to near 50 mph across northern Door
County late tonight into early Wednesday afternoon. Have issued
a wind advisory for Door County for the strong winds and the
potential for some damage to trees and power lines, resulting in
sporadic power outages.

On Wednesday, the chances of showers will linger into Wednesday
afternoon across the north due to cold northerly flow off Lake
Superior. Did not stray far from guidance/previous forecast for
high temperatures.

.LONG TERM...Wednesday Night Through Tuesday
Issued at 241 PM CDT Tue Oct 15 2019

A surface ridge will bring dry conditions Wednesday night through
Friday. As the ridge shifts east on Friday, milder air will arrive,
with highs rising into the middle 50s to lower 60s.

A chance of showers will arrive Friday night into Saturday as a
cold front moves through. The best chance will occur as a short-
wave trof and RRQ of an upper jet interact with the front on
Saturday. This system should shift east of the region by Saturday
evening, with dry weather lingering through Sunday.

A strong low pressure system is expected to track from the
Central Plains Sunday night to near Hudson Bay on Tuesday. With
the low expected to track to our west, this system should be
mainly a rain producer. The most significant precipitation is
anticipated Sunday night, followed by a dry slot that should
bring a lull in the precipitation for part of the day on Monday.
Wrap-around precipitation should linger into Tuesday, with the
biggest impacts expected over the northwest part of the forecast
area.

.AVIATION...for 18Z TAF Issuance
Issued at 1155 AM CDT Tue Oct 15 2019

Early this afternoon, surface low pressure was located just
west of KMFI/KISW with a warm front extending eastward into
northeast Wisconsin (near KPCZ/KATW to KMTW. The surface
low will track northeast across the area this afternoon with
scattered showers and thunderstorms continuing. Scattered
showers will continue this evening, with a few thunderstorms
possible across northeast Wisconsin. Behind the system, strong
northwest winds are expected late tonight and Wednesday, with
gusts over 30 knots possibly, especially across northeast and
east-central Wisconsin.

CIGS have been problematic this morning, ranging from IFR to
VFR. Expected CIGS to lower into the IFR category this afternoon
and tonight, if they haven't already. MVFR conditions are expected
across central and east-central Wisconsin. CIGS will gradually
improve on Wednesday as drier air works into the region.

Scattered thunderstorms will end late this afternoon. A few of
the storms will produce small hail. Otherwise, a small craft
advisory remains in effect until 3 am for gusty winds and high

afternoon into Wednesday afternoon.

A wind advisory is in effect Wednesday for Door County, where
wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are expected. The strongest winds
will occur near Deaths Door. The strong winds may cause damage
to trees and power lines, resulting in sporadic power outages.

There is a chance of thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday.

Spotters across northeast Wisconsin are requested to report hail
a half inch in diameter or greater for the remainder of this
