* WHAT...Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. 
  Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Kansas, east 
  central and northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy 
  blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday night)
Issued at 436 AM MDT Tue Apr 9 2019

Numerous forecast concerns through the period. Satellite showing a
somewhat amplified but still progressive flow from the Pacific
into the western Atlantic. At mid levels are starting a little too
far east/south with the incoming western trough. They were all
pretty close but the Nam was slightly better.

Today/tonight...Newest data supported raising maxes with lower to
middle 80s over most if not all of the area. Latest data also
supported upgrading the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning.
Refer to the discussion below.

Wednesday/Wednesday night...Models look to be slightly slower with
the arrival of the system. A little disconcerting is the models
differ on how far south to take this system with the furthest
north being the Nam. However what is encouraging is that the
models are close to each other on where they put the highest
precipitation amounts.

Since the models are slower with the system, the front is now
further north and slower than before, the high temperatures for
the southern portion of the area had to be raised. Could end up
being nearly a 30 degree difference between the northern and
southern portions of the area.

Left front quadrant moves across the area during the day. Also
models showing extremely strong mid level lift developing through
the day in advance of this system. Also theta-e lapse rates are zero
or negative. So expect a very good response to the lift which will
be deep when you factor in the front. Cape is across the area with
the higher values in the eastern portion of the area. Shear values
approach 40. That combined with the good lapse rates, severe storms
will be possible, especially over the eastern third which matches
the new Day 2 Severe Outlook from SPC.

Mid level closed off low moves across the area during the night.
Very strong synoptic and mesoscale forcing move across, especially
on the backside of the system. Theta-e lapse rates aloft remain
low. Some indication that there could be embedded thunder. As
stated above would like to see more agreement on the path of the
storm but qpf amounts are close to each and impressive.

Saw the same thing on phase as the day shift saw. There could be a
brief period of freezing rain in there. But the big threats will be
the heavy snow and very strong winds on the backside of the system.
Total snowfall amounts are a little higher across the entire area.
Highest amounts in the northern portion and lowest in the far
southern and eastern portions.

Very impressive wind field. Bufkit and 700 mb winds would indicate
the potential for gusts up to 75 mph. Current wind forecasts have
gusts up to 65 mph. Based on this and what these kind of winds did
with the March storm, I went ahead and expanded the Winter Storm
Watch to the entire area. Also if the freezing rain materializes,
that would also justify the expansion.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Blizzard conditions will be possible for parts of the Tri-State area
north of I-70 Thursday morning as snow continues to fall. Cooler
than previously expected, high temperatures on Thursday will
struggle to get into the mid 30s for most. Total snowfall amounts
from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon could reach 4 to
8 inches north of I-70 and west of US Hwy 83, but there remains a
lot of uncertainty with this event. Areas south of I-70 and east of
US Hwy 83 could still see snowfall totals of 1 to 4 inches. Soil
temperatures are relatively warm in the mid 50s and rain is expected
during the day Wednesday before the snow gets going Wednesday
afternoon/evening. These factors make for a difficult snowfall
forecast for this event as far as figuring out exactly how much snow
will remain as snow once it hits the ground.

Regardless of how much snow sticks to the ground, the fact that
there will be some moderately heavy snow at times will likely lead
to blizzard conditions as frequent wind gusts up to and beyond 60
mph are expected across the Tri-State area. These wind gusts could
be damaging and impactful even south of I-70 and east of US Hwy 83
where lesser snow amounts are currently forecasted. Peak wind gusts
up to and beyond 60 mph could last through Thursday afternoon across
the Central High Plains.

With shallow convection expected on Thursday and some warming
temperatures back above freezing at times, it's possible that there
will be some freezing rain mixed in with snow and rain showers.
However, any ice accumulations are expected to be light at generally
less than 0.05 inches, if any at all. The more impactful weather
will be the increasing likelihood for blowing snow and blizzard-like
conditions Thursday morning. Gusty winds and blowing snow will make
travel difficult at times Thursday morning and afternoon. In
addition, between Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon, total
liquid precipitation amounts could approach an inch, especially
north of I-70. This includes what will fall as rain during the day
Wednesday and what will fall as snow Wednesday night through
Thursday.

After the rain/snow showers move out Thursday evening, unseasonably
cold temperatures are expected as lows Friday and Saturday morning
will dip into the low 20s for most with some locations even down to
the upper teens. High temperatures will slowly warm back up with
highs around 40 degrees Friday and the mid 40s Saturday. Snow
showers will return to parts of the Tri-State area very late Friday
night and into early Saturday moving in from west to east. However,
no significant additional snow accumulations are currently
anticipated for this precip event this weekend. Light snow showers
will transition over to light rain showers and slowly taper off
Saturday night.

Sunday and Monday will see quieter, drier weather with some clearing
skies as well. The gradual warming trend will continue through the
weekend and into early next week with highs in the upper 50s Sunday
and the upper 60s Monday. Low temperatures should finally come back
up above sub-freezing temperatures by Monday with morning lows in
the mid to upper 30s for most. Tuesday will be even warmer with lows
Tuesday morning in the 40s and highs Tuesday afternoon in the upper
60s to low 70s. However, current model guidance suggests
precipitation chances could return Tuesday afternoon with some rain
showers. Forecaster confidence remains low for this event this far
in advance.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

Southerly winds are anticipated at the KMCK and KGLD terminals
Tuesday afternoon and evening, with gusts around 25 knots
possible through 00Z. Cloud cover increases towards the end of
the period as winds begin to shift towards the north and
strengthen due to an approaching storm system. At KMCK, low-level
wind shear is anticipated overnight into early Wednesday.

A Red Flag Warning is currently in effect for counties along the
Colorado border, ending tonight.

For Wednesday, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Greeley
and Wichita counties in Kansas during the afternoon hours. Winds
and low RH will be there but the uncertainty lies in the timing of
the cold front. If the front speeds up, it is unlikely that the
duration will be met for Red Flag Warning criteria. At this time,
will hold off on upgrading to a warning.

.DAY ONE...THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...

A Red Flag Warning is currently in effect through the evening hours
for all counties along and west of the Colorado border.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...WEDNESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...

A strong storm system will bring significant impacts to the region
Wednesday through Thursday. Initially, thunderstorms will develop
across the area on Wednesday. These storms will increase in coverage
and intensity during the afternoon and evening hours. Some of these
storms could become severe with large hail and damaging winds as the
main threats. The area with the best chance to have severe
thunderstorms will be along and east of a line from Gove to McCook.

Critical to near-critical fire weather conditions will also be
possible Wednesday afternoon ahead of a strong cold front. Behind the
front, very windy conditions are anticipated. North to northwest
winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected. Wind
gusts up to 75 mph will be possible.

Rain develops across the area during the day on Wednesday. That rain
will mix with and change to snow across the area from west to east
behind a cold front Wednesday night into Thursday. During this
transition, a few hundredths of an inch of ice may occur. The snow
and very strong winds could create near blizzard conditions.
