.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Look for mild Spring weather today before a potent storm brings
significant changes to our area the Wednesday/Thursday. Aloft the
pattern shows an upper trough (our upcoming storm system) moving
inland into Pacific Northwest early this morning. This system will
deepen over the intermountain west today, allowing for upper
ridging across the Central Plains. Surface cyclogenesis is
expected over eastern Colorado today with a warm frontal boundary
lifting north. Temperatures will be rather warm for early April
with 80s south of the front in Kansas and 70s to the north. The
warm temps and gusty winds and increased mixing have led to near
critical fire weather conditions the last couple of days, however
an increase in moisture/dewpoints should hold low relative
humidity values in the 30th percentile and lessening fire weather
concerns this aftn.

The western trough reaches the northern/central Rockies tonight and
cold air begins to sag south from the Dakotas. Increasing dynamics
and a strengthening low level jet over the baroclinic zone may lead
to elevated convection/isolated to scattered thunderstorms mainly
for locations along/north of Interstate 80 this evening/tonight.
Models suggest our northern zones may be on the southern edge of the
convection, but if storms develop, cannot rule out a strong to
possibly severe storm given model instability/shear parameters.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Focus remains on an impactful Spring storm to impact our region
Wednesday through Thursday night, bringing thunderstorms, wintry
precipitation (freezing rain/snow) and intense winds.

Models are consistent with a deepening, closed upper low pressure
system tracking across the central Rockies Wednesday and crossing
our area Thursday. The cold front continues to sag south from
northern/western Nebraska into central Nebraska Wed with precip
developing in increased dynamics. A rather extreme temperature
gradient is expected Wednesday north/south across our area with
40s in the north (cold side) to temps around 80F in the south
(warm side) of the system. Severe storms remain a concern
Wednesday especially across our southern/eastern zones in
instability axis and boundary orientation. Hail/wind is the
primary hazard however cannot rule out a tornado in our far
southeast counties...see SPC outlook for further information.

Models track the upper low across south central/eastern Nebraska
Wednesday night and Thursday. As colder air is drawn into the
back side of the system, surface temperatures drop below freezing
in our west, while a warm nose remains in the mid levels and this
is expected to leading to a period of freezing rain before the
cold air deepens and the precip to change snow. Continued to
maintain an area of freezing precip with potential ice
accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch to tenth or two of
inch primarily for areas in our current winter storm watch area.
Confidence in snow amounts is not high at this time with the
latest ECMWF farther north and west with track of the surface low,
keeping warmer air in our eastern areas longer and would overall
lessen potential snow amounts. Given the change in the ECMWF and
other model snow accums not as high this run...have not deviated
from our current winter storm watch headline. Our western and
northern zones are still favored for accumulating snowfall and
potentially significant amounts. Have general 3 to 6 inch snow
amounts in the the current watch area and locally higher amounts
cannot be ruled out (especially from Ord to Lexington), but this
will need to be refined as models come into better agreement. Any
snow combined with intense north wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph will
create treacherous/blizzard conditions. Be sure to stay up to date
on the latest forecasts where the transition zone between
rain/freezing rain/and the higher snow amounts are expected. The
system lifts out Thursday night with precip ending and winds
gradually decreasing through the day Friday.

No changes to the ensemble blends over the weekend into early next
week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 18Z Wednesday)

Winds will be gusty this afternoon and after sunset should taper
down a little but the gradient will tighten back up overnight and
gusts to 25kts will be possible. A LLJ will setup tonight but
with the strong surface winds will leave out a mention of LLWS as
criteria will not be met for LLWS. Their is good directional shear
over the TAF sites with the SFC winds out of the east and the LLJ
will be out of the SSW during the early morning hours. Dropped
mention of VCTS for now as models are showing better chances for
TS activity north of the TAF sites.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for south central Nebraska and
portions of north central Kansas.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight.

There is a chance for thunderstorms this evening and tonight,
primarily for areas along and north of Interstate 80. A few
storms may become strong and produce small hail and gusty winds.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

A powerful spring storm system will impact our region Wednesday
through Thursday night, bringing several weather concerns.
Wednesday afternoon and evening will see continued chances for
thunderstorms and the potential for severe weather. While the
entire area could see general thunderstorm activity, areas mainly
southeast of a Fullerton to Cambridge line are currently under a
Marginal to Slight Risk for severe storms. Large hail and damaging
winds are the main threats, but a tornadic storm cannot be
completely ruled out in far southern and southeast counties. The
main time frame for severe storms Wednesday looks to focus between
3 PM and Midnight.

As cold air arrives Wednesday night and Thursday, wintry weather
returns as rain changes to freezing rain, sleet and snow,
accompanied by intense northerly winds. A blizzard warning is in
effect Wednesday evening through Thursday night for areas
northwest of a line from Beaver City to St. Paul where snow
amounts of 3 to 6 inches locally up to 7 inches are forecast. Due
to strong northerly winds sustained at 30 to 40 MPH and gusting
50 to 60 MPH, blizzard conditions and drifting snow are likely at
times, which could make travel quite treacherous. Snow will end
across the area late Thursday night into Friday morning, as winds
gradually subside as well. A winter weather advisory buffers the
blizzard warning on the southeast side of the blizzard warned
area where lighter snowfall amounts of 1-3 inches will be
possible.

Although snow should be the main wintry precipitation type, at
least a period of sleet and freezing rain is also possible
Wednesday night, especially within the blizzard warned area.
Generally one to two tenths of an inch of ice accumulation could
occur.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation should not be needed through tonight, but may
be needed Wednesday afternoon and evening.
