Have issued a dense fog advisory tonight along and east of the
James. Fog is expected to expand westward through the night as
moisture from the melting snow pack gets trapped in the near
surface layer. Fog may not improve till northerly winds kick in,
but issued through 18Z Wednesday as a starting point.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

A robust and dynamic low currently evident on WV imagery spinning
over the desert southwest and will have a large impact on the
region over the next several days. In the very near term, a
subtle lead shortwave has resulted in shower moving east and
northeast thru areas mainly east of the I-29 corridor.

By tonight, the broad upper level trough begins to eject out into
the Central US with stout moisture return flow continuing. This
will likely lead to fog development/expansion this evening and
overnight and is already quite widespread to our south. Isentropic
lift will also increase thru the night. This combined with some
elevated instability (mainly south of I-90) will lead to an
initial round of precipitation before/around the daybreak hours
Wednesday. Quick behind we'll see a second reinforcing and broader
round of precipitation filling in thru the day Wednesday from
south to north as better lift and upper level support arrives.

By Wednesday evening, surface low lifts into south central KS with
better isentropic forcing and DivQ focused more along/west of the
James River. Thus could see precipitation drop off to more of a
drizzle further to the east as deeper moisture is temporally
lost.

As the surface low moves into southeast Neb Wednesday night into
Thursday, several things begin to happen. First, the surface
pressure gradient begins to tighten with north/northwesterly winds
increasing. Second, an area of strong frontogenesis in the 925:700
mb layer will cause a secondary band of precipitation, with
models currently favoring the James River Valley currently before
the TROWAL precip overtakes it. Third, cold air begins to crash in
from west to east leading to precip type questions.

The surface low continues to pull to the north and east thru the
day Thursday with fading lift and thus fading precip chances,
although light snow is possible into at least the evening hours.

Winter Weather: Forecast soundings and MaxTw aloft continue to
point to mainly liquid precipitation but the concern would be from
areas near Chamberlain to Huron where cold air on the west side of
the inverted trough may hold tight for a period Wednesday morning
to allow for freezing rain. Model surface temperatures and wet
bulbs have generally been on a warming trend lately but a degree
or two change in temperature will make all the difference on ice
amounts with plenty of QPF to work with.

Next winter weather concern will be Thursday as cold air filters
back in and eventually changes things back to snow from west to
east across the CWA. Again, the previously mentioned secondary
band of precipitation Thursday morning could lead to locally
higher amounts, although precip type at this time is still very
uncertain.

Rain/Flooding: Total liquid equivalent with this system continue
to look impressive with a broad area of 1 to 2 inches across most
areas, perhaps locally higher if some enhanced rates are achieved.
This will no doubt cause issues in low lying and poor drainage
areas.

Winds: NAEFS guidance continues to point to surface pressure and
850 mb winds nearing or hitting climatological records for the
date. Soundings also continue to show winds at the top of the
mixed layer of at least 50 kts, perhaps higher. Kept winds at the
higher end of guidance as some wind gusts in the 50-60+ mph range
certainly look possible Thursday. Any amount of falling snow will
cause significant issues Thursday with those wind speeds.

Headlines: With low confidence in the freezing rain risk
(temperatures hovering right around freezing) early Wednesday
across our far western counties, only converted a narrow ribbon
over to Winter Storm Warnings. Will let future shifts take another
look at temperature trends and determine if the warning or
additional advisories are need further east to icing. Also
decided to expand the Winter Storm Watch further to the east to
address the significant risk of blowing snow and possible near
blizzard conditions on Thursday. The Flood Watch was also expanded
to the rest of our counties with plenty of rain expected.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

Any lingering snow will be on the decrease Thursday night with
winds also fading slowly Thursday night and Friday.

With active weather in the short term, no changes were made to the
blended model guidance in the extended. In general, it looks like
thing quiet down again into the weekend, with temperatures
generally running near or a little below normal.

Conditions will become increasingly worse by evening as ceilings
and visibilities lower into the LIFR range as fog develops across

aloft, low level wind shear will occur at KSUX later this evening
into Wednesday.

A very strong storm system will work onto the Plains today and
slowly work northeast through Thursday. This will bring a threat
for freezing rain late tonight into Wednesday morning. The threat
for snow and additional freezing rain will continue into
Wednesday night as north winds increase, with gusts to 60 mph
possible. The combination of wind gusts around 60 mph and either
freezing rain or snow will be very impactful. Please continue to
monitor the forecast, especially if you have travel plans on
Wednesday or Thursday.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Moderate to heavy rainfall will spread across the area on
Wednesday which could lead towards flooding of roads and rises in
local creeks, streams and rivers. Late Wednesday night into
Thursday morning very strong winds of 50 to 60 mph may also
combine with with rain and snow to create very hazardous
conditions. Confidence on the snow and wind Thursday is marginal
but if one to three inches of snow falls Thursday with wind gusts
around 60 mph highly dangerous conditions will be likely.

Now is a good time to prepare for the heavy rain by clearing
drains around homes and businesses as well as storm drains along
roads and highways. Please continue to monitor the forecast in
case the threat for wintry precipitation shifts east. Any travel
planned on Wednesday will be hampered by poor weather conditions,
especially in the afternoon and at night west of Interstate 29 and
Thursday could also prove to be a dangerous travel day.
