Patchy valley fog is possible this morning, mainly in areas south
and west of Sioux Falls SD, where skies have remained mostly clear
overnight. Light south winds and some diffuse sunshine will help mix
any fog out by late morning. High cloud cover will increase
throughout the day, which will be the first sign of an impactful
winter storm system moving in later tonight.
Recent high-resolution model runs have delayed the onset of
precipitation for this evening, with most not showing saturation of
the low levels until 9pm to midnight for areas west of I-29, and
midnight to 3am Sat east of I-29. Precipitation type will be a
challenge throughout the lifecycle of this system. The initial wave
which pushes through overnight has a warm nose that will be above
freezing for portions of the area. Surface temperatures in Northwest
IA will be at or just below freezing, resulting in a chance for
light freezing rain mixed with rain. Further to the northwest, in
areas like Huron SD, temperatures may stay cold enough for all snow.
Have kept the official forecast near consensus, showing a couple
inches of widespread light snow overnight into Saturday morning,
along with up to a tenth of an inch of freezing rain. This is an
exceptionally low confidence short term forecast, given temperature
errors of 1 to 3 degrees are very common 24 hours ahead of an event,
which would make a big difference in precip type when surface and
lower atmosphere temperatures are hovering near 32 degrees. Given
this uncertainty, have kept the Winter Storm Watch in place, but
have not added additional Watches, Advisories, or Warnings at this
time.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Warm air advection in the southeast quadrant of the surface low is
likely to cause a changeover to pure rain for northwest IA during
the daytime hours on Saturday. Elsewhere, the dry slot of the
initial wave will cause precipitation to decrease in intensity for a
short period. A second shortwave will move through the larger trough
Saturday night into Sunday, and it's this wave that is more likely
to bring the impactful heavy snow and wind. The track of this second
wave has been highly variable run-to-run, but currently locations
west of I-29 and north of I-90 are most likely to see snow
accumulations over 6 inches, with some 12 inch or greater amounts
possible closer to central SD. Robust synoptic scale lift with
coincident frontogenesis may contribute to snowfall rates of 1" per
hour. These threats are the primary reason for the current Winter
Storm Watch being in effect.
By mid-day Sunday, the best dynamics will begin to exit the area.
But given the orientation of the longwave, the backside of the
system will be slow to exit completely. Modest lift remains over the
area throughout the day Sunday and into the day Monday. A building
high pressure to the west will increase the pressure gradient
leading to gusty winds and areas of blowing snow Sunday afternoon
through Monday morning. Snowfall rates are not expected to be
impressive, but the light falling snow along with gusts 25 to 35 mph
may be enough to lower visibility and keep travel hazardous. Have
extended the Winter Storm Watch through 12z to cover this potential,
and future shifts may have to extend further.
Light snow ends Tuesday, with less active weather through the middle
of the week. Temperatures Wednesday will warm slightly to near
seasonal normals. Another weak weather system Thursday could bring
additional light snow, but confidence is very low at this time.

period, with precipitation expanding northeast across the region
through tonight. Precipitation types at any specific point or time

temperatures from the surface and within the lowest 4-5kft will
