Messy and not very straight forward forecast with any
small change in temperatures from the surface to about 8000 feet
causing a wide variety of precipitation type potential. A change of
just a couple of degrees in this column will be the difference of
rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow. Headlines are very difficult.
Decided to extend much of the existing advisory to cover for
freezing drizzle potential into the afternoon then into tonight
for the heavier precipitation even though we may see a lull in
activity today. Expect precipitation to increase significantly
late afternoon and early evening.
And to complicate things during the overnight hours and very early
this morning just a bit of additional saturation near the dendritic
zone allowed for light snow to develop instead of freezing drizzle.
However the trends through the morning will be to dry things out
even more aloft so all signs continue to point towards freezing
drizzle developing through the morning. So plan on keeping the
advisories in place and will extend them in many locations through
the evening and overnight hours for the incoming strong lift
tonight. The signals for freezing drizzle not quite as strong as
earlier but still there. While the GFS continues to be a bit too
warm in the low levels compared to the other models it is finally
closer. With this in mind expect high temperatures to only climb
between about 30 and 35 most locations. The temperature aloft
begins to climb this afternoon as well so there will be a bit
better chance for liquid precipitation south of Interstate 90 and
still anticipate a mix of possible freezing rain/sleet and snow to
the north. So overall think that any fog/fzdz today will
gradually diminish a bit into the afternoon then the stronger lift
and weak instability will move into the area late afternoon and
race northward. This should bring a few bands of moderate to
briefly heavy precipitation with the main focus north of
Interstate 90 where the colder air both aloft and at the surface
could lock in and bring wintry precipitation through late tonight
before sneaking above 32 degrees. This evening could could pretty
messy north of Interstate 90 if surface temperatures lock in below
freezing and temperatures aloft climb far enough above freezing ti
support more liquid precipitation than mixed.
Will see warmer air build in from the south tonight and expect
wintry precipitation to change to mainly rain, so will heave
headlines ending from southeast to northwest through the evening.
The middle James Valley will remain in a advisory through 18z
Saturday before transitioning to a winter storm watch as the system
wraps up and shifts east. The middle James Valley will stay in the
colder air the longest and may not quite change to rain but a tough
call. Right now thinking that tonight will see roughly 2 to 5 inches
north of Interstate 90 with the better chance for higher amounts
near highway 14. Closer to Interstate 90 there will be a better
chance to mix in some sleet or freezing precipitation.

As stated before the GFS has finally come down a bit with
temperatures in the low level wrapping around the north side, but
it still continues to be a few degrees warmer than all other
models. So will knock a few degrees off of highs in central SD and
begin dropping temperatures in the afternoon. Expect any mixed
precipitation or rainfall there to switch to snow Saturday
afternoon and when coupled with some very strong winds conditions
could deteriorate rapidly.
As the system shifts east the snow will not be quite as heavy but
strong winds will fill in behind and should create some messy
conditions through Sunday morning. For now not anticipating any
winter storm warnings or blizzard warnings east of the James River
as snowfall rates and a lack of any blowable snow on the ground
should keep the impacts more on the hazardous side versus life
threatening. Regardless, travel north or west on Saturday night will
not be fun.
Monday through Thursday next week continues to look seasonally mild
with little to no chance for precipitation. Highs mostly 30s to
lower 40s and lows in the 20s with maybe a few teens.

Very difficult set of tafs with VLIFR conditions across the
region. Precipitation will increase across the region late this
afternoon as initial mid level short wave moves into the area.
This precipitation will likely fall as snow at KHON, becoming
heavy at times overnight. Tough call on precipitation type in
KFSD, but will likely be a mix between freezing rain and snow
based on intensity. Further to the south at KSUX, will generally
see rain throughout the night. Precipitation will continue
throughout the night tonight, before a dry slot creates a
temporary reprieve to the precipitation.
Ceilings will remain very low through the period.
