A very active week ahead in terms of weather, with a series of
impactful storms affecting the region - one in the Tuesday/Tuesday
night time frame, and then again for the end of the week.
Before then, another quiet night ahead with northwesterly winds
picking up later in the night as a cold front sweeps through the
area. Not extremely cold behind the front so lows will remain in the
mid to upper 30s.
In spite of the cold frontal passage, Monday will remain relatively
mild. It will be windy however, with continuing cold air advection
behind the aforementioned front and a tight surface gradient as a
deep area of low pressure slides through the Upper MS Valley/western
Great Lakes region. Highs will mainly be in the mid 40s to lower 50s.

Things begin to go downhill by Tuesday as a deepening upper level low
ejects out of Colorado and into the Central Plains through Tuesday
night. Models continue to take on a more northward trend with each
consecutive model run. The main theme however is for light snow to
develop over south central SD on Tuesday morning then overspread the
area to the east by afternoon - as strong midlevel frontogenesis
develops across the area. Where this occurs will eventually
determine who will receive the greatest snowfall - which will
continued to be refined over the next day or so. At this point, the
greater snowfall looks to occur through the southeastern half of our
CWA - south and east of a line roughly from Lake Andes to Sioux
Falls to Marshall, MN where 4 to 6 inches will be possible. The NBM
again came in too low with QPF for Tuesday into Wednesday, so
continued to weigh precipitation amounts toward WPC guidance for
heavier amounts. In addition, NBM guidance came in too warm, so
lowered high temperatures for Tuesday, and increased winds through
Wednesday. Also increased pops on Tuesday night as the NBM pulled
the system through too quickly. The heaviest precipitation will
occur on Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening, before tapering off
by Wednesday morning. In light of all the above, elected to go with
A Winter Storm Watch for the above mentioned area for Tuesday into
Wednesday morning.
Will have a brief break by Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday
evening, before the potential for snow increases again on
Thanksgiving Day as mid level warm air advection overspreads the
region. Although there are model differences, it does not appear to
be a significant event at this point.
A much more impactful system is probable for the end of the week
(Friday and Saturday) as a deep upper level trough over the western
CONUS drifts eastward through the period. Still a lot of uncertainty
with this system, though this storm has the potential to bring an
assortment of hazards, including rain, freezing rain, snow and wind,
and will have to be monitored closely through the upcoming week.
