A quiet but fairly cloudy day today ahead of the expected winter
storm for late tonight into Saturday. Southeast winds will gradually
increase through the day and help keep less cold conditions in
place. Lowered highs just a touch based off of the expected stratus
and forecast 925mb temperatures. So mainly looking at upper 20s to
lower 30s most locations. Dry air aloft does hint at a small
potential for freezing drizzle this afternoon and evening but the
mixed layer seems to maintain some drying so will not introduce any.
Ahead of the main lift and moisture the low level moisture deepens to
3000 to 4000 feet deep and does support a better chance for a 1 to 4
hour period of light freezing drizzle before precipitation develops
as the mid levels and ice bearing layer saturate. Confidence late
tonight in precip type, from roughly 6-12z and from about the James
River to Interstate 29, is a little low. Both GFS and nam soundings
show a warm layer right around 0 degrees C that is a couple to a few
thousand feet deep which supports the potential for about any type
of precipitation. For now have slowed the northeast progression a
bit with dry air aloft to fight through. Snowfall amounts before 12z
west of the James River may climb to 2 to 3 inches, but east of the
James River amounts will be less with a later start and potential
for a period of mixed precipitation to begin. Surface temperatures
will only fall a couple of degrees and will likely rise to around or
above the Friday highs by early Saturday morning. The surface
temperature will also play a big role in precipitation type.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Saturday will see the bulk of the heaviest snow, with some
measurable snow lingering into Saturday night across mainly
southwest MN. A strong surge of moisture and lift will move in on
Saturday morning, and from late morning into the afternoon a trowal
like feature will develop north of I-90 from about De Smet towards
Marshall and Ivanhoe. This will likely bring a more prolonged period
of snow to these areas where the rest of the area will likely see
about 6-8 hours of heavier snowfall. Of course the models are not in
perfect agreement with this but that seems like the preferred
location, so will have the highest snow amounts there.
On the warmer side of things across northwest IA snowfall amounts
should decrease quickly and the threat for freezing rain will
increase towards Ida Grove and Storm Lake. Right now looking like a
very sharp gradient of snowfall on the southeast side of this area
of precipitation.
With this in mind will upgrade to a warning north of Interstate 90
and keep the watch going in the other areas. The only exception will
be south central SD which will be in a warning late tonight into
Saturday night with the thought that even if they only get 3-5" of
snow northwest winds will be very strong there late Saturday
afternoon into the early evening. Confidence on this gradient will
be a challenge for the next 24 to 36 hours.
Sunday will see conditions improve as northwest winds diminish
through the day. The air behind this system is not excessively cold
but will still only see highs in the 20s. Sunday night into Monday
remains dry with lows in the single digits and highs in the 20s,
maybe a few 30s near the Missouri River.
The next major system will spread onto the Plains on Tuesday with
some lead energy swinging out. The major piece of energy will work
out on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Models still in very good
agreement with the strength of the system just off on placement and
timing a bit. The models also continue to show that this system will
likely be strong than the system for Saturday. Trends continue to
take the upper level wave farther west which may put our area more
into the warm sector which will support more of a threat for
rainfall. Other than being sick of snow, this is not a great
solution as the models are also hinting at one to two inches of
rainfall and with widespread snow on the ground and likely many
clogged drains on roadways not really sure where all of this water
will go if it falls as it looks possible. Will need to monitor the
threat for street flooding if it does come down to 1-2 inches of
rainfall.
