The heaviest snows appear like they will fall from roughly midnight to 9 am. This system is not expected to produce widespread blowing or drifting snow but the bulk of the heaviest snow will occur just before and into the morning rush, especially along and east of Interstate 29. Today's focus will be on the next potent shortwave targeting the
central Plains and Upper Midwest. The main change for the current
model runs is a slightly more northerly track than previously. As a
result, snowfall amounts have been increased across the southeastern
two-thirds of the forecast area. The good news remains that winds
look relatively light through the duration of this event, keeping
blowing snow concerns at a minimum.
Deep upper level trough continues to dig across the Intermountain
west and Four Corners region this morning. Initial light snowfall
band will gradually push into south central SD mid level thermal
gradient. Dry air will slow the spread of snow to the north and east
across south central and southeast through early afternoon. As the
gradient shifts into central SD in the afternoon, there may be a
brief break in the light snowfall. As it is, snowfall is expected to
be minimal with this activity through much of the afternoon - more
akin to flurries. Clouds will increase through the day, however the
warm air advection regime will still allow highs to warm into the
teens and lower 20s.
The stronger forcing starts working into the Missouri Valley this
evening, while the low and mid level moisture increases. Light to
moderate snowfall will increase across the region during this time,
however may closer to midnight before reaching southwest Minnesota
and east central SD. Weaker frontogenetic forcing lifts into the far
southeast SD and northwest Iowa during this time, however models are
in agreement in keeping the stronger forcing and lift south of
the forecast area.
After midnight, a jet streak/stronger forcing lifts into the eastern
half of the forecast area. Better organized frontogenesis pushes
into east central/northwest Iowa in the early morning hours
Wednesday. The NAM hints at the potential for some instability
associated with the frontogenesis near our southeastern corner.
With plenty of moisture advection, expect rather efficient
snowfall production in particular in far southeast SD, northeast
Nebraska, and southwest Minnesota with 1" or more per hour
snowfall rates. Northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska in
particularly have the potential for seeing these enhanced snowfall
rates between midnight and daybreak Wednesday. Additionally,
snowfall ratios are expected in the 15:1 to 20:1 range, leading to
significant snowfall totals in a relatively short period of time.
The wave quickly lifts to the northeast through Wednesday morning,
with snowfall tapering off from southwest to northeast in the
afternoon. The bulk of the accumulations will be done by midday
Wednesday.
For headlines: Upgraded the watch area to a winter storm warning,
and added several more counties where a solid 6 to 8 inches of
snowfall is expected. The recent more northerly tracks seen this
model run has left some uncertainty in how far west and north the
heaviest snow will fall, so went with a good starting point. On the
fringe, will issue a winter weather advisory where amounts are
expected in to be solidly in the 3 to 6 inch range. If the more
northerly track trend continues, may need to add a few counties on
the western fringe.

With the focus on the winter storm for tonight and Wednesday, did
not make much adjustment to the extended grids. The screaming
message remains: very active and wet pattern continues. Expect a
pair of waves - the first around the Friday afternoon/Friday night
time frame, then a more significant system this weekend. It should
be mentioned that the weekend system in particular has a great deal
of model uncertainty at this time. Confidence is very low.

Primarily VFR conditions expected for the first half of the TAF
period with some caveats. As of late evening, a couple sites
(largely in NW IA) have been reporting vsby restrictions from fog,
although conditions seem to be somewhat fleeting. Latest models
continue to indicate potential expansion of this fog thru the
overnight hours, although confidence is low of vsby restrictions
actually occurring at one of the TAF sites themselves. Have
included non-restrictive mention at this time and will monitor
trends thru the night.
Clouds will be on the increase and lowering thru the day Tuesday
ahead of our next incoming system. This will bring MVFR ceilings
and reduced visibility from falling snow by late in the period.
