Thursday morning water vapor imagery showing an impressive mid-level
circulation moving across the eastern Dakotas and into Minnesota.
Widespread light snow totals have been reported this morning.
We're starting to see the back edge of precipitation on both
radar and satellite as of 3am, with light snow or freezing
drizzle moving east by daybreak.
A cloudy, but quiet Thursday is anticipated. Temperatures will rise
into the lower to middle 20s in most areas. Some areas south of the
Missouri River may reach near 30.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

All eyes remained focused on a widespread snow event beginning
Friday and ending Friday night. Generally, guidance remains in very
good agreement this morning, leading to only minor changes and
refinement of timing and amounts. Warm advection and mid-level
frontogenesis will commence after midnight across the central
Dakotas, with precipitation spreading eastward towards SW
Minnesota by daybreak. While the initial snow band may diminish
somewhat as daybreak arrives, a secondary area of frontogenetical
forcing on the 750:650 layer will rapidly form and increase by
mid-morning. High resolution guidance is suggesting an intense
band of snow focusing across the CWA by mid- day and pivoting into
NW Iowa by late afternoon and evening. Cross sections suggest
shades of instability above this strong frontal forcing,
suggesting that a corridor of heavy snow could develop along an
axis along or south of the I-90 corridor. Given broad upper
divergence in the right entrance of a northern jet, precipitation
should have no issues maintaining strength through the afternoon
and early evening.
The upper wave will slowly move eastward Friday evening, but we'll
continue to see snow along and east of I-29 into the early overnight
hours. Winds throughout the event won't be incredibly strong, but
with average speeds around 15 knots and the very fluffy nature to
the snow, minor drifting is expected.
Snow Totals: The main factors impacting snowfall totals will be the
initial intensity and duration in time to top-down saturate the
soundings. Secondly, elevated frontal forcing may reposition or
narrow in the corridor of higher snow totals. Nevertheless, there
have been solid trends in model QPF to support higher numbers,
with ensembles suggesting anywhere from 0.35-0.45" of QPF over a
broad area. Have blended in WPC numbers in all periods except
Friday afternoon, where I feel that superblend perhaps has a
better hold on the mesoscale impacts. The other impact to totals
will be from SLR, which will be increasing through the day. Totals
have increased slightly tonight, with widespread 4 to 7" totals
over the region. However, I could really see the potential for a
narrowed corridor of higher totals of 6-9", depending on mesoscale
forcing that's undetermined at this time.
Headlines: With an ongoing advisory already issued over the western
zones, after coordinating with surrounding offices, it makes sense
to expand the advisory over the entire CWA instead of swapping back
to a watch product. That said, it's certainly possible to see
advisories bumped up to localized warnings as mesoscale signs can be
focused on in the next 24 hours.
Saturday-Sunday: Signs continue to point towards a more "muted" cold
spell behind this snow system. A dry and cold Saturday should
produce a very cold night into Sunday morning. However, models
continue to trend stronger with return flow and increasing clouds
and precipitation late Saturday night into Sunday. Minor
accumulations over SW Minnesota now look likely, with wind chills
in most areas only falling towards -20 in some areas Sunday
morning. Have bumped up PoPs to the likely category Sunday
morning.
Monday-Wednesday. A very unsettled pattern develops for next week
with multiple snow chances. Models are a bit more in agreement
bringing another trough into the area Monday into Tuesday. This
system, while progressive, may bring the risk for a few inches of
snow accumulation once again.

east of the James River through the mid afternoon, but likely to
return from the north in at least a scattered to broken phase
later in the day. Snow producing system will begin to encroach on
the area by later in the night, with visibility likely dropping to
less than a mile in light snow at KFSD and KHON from later night
into the morning as it develops across the area.
