.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Impressively wound up low pressure system from yesterday is now
currently spinning over WI and eventually making its way into the
Great Lakes region. This has allowed for a tight surface pressure
gradient on its backside, and in combination with stout cold air
advection, has resulted in very gusty northwesterly winds across
the region. As the pressure gradient begins to slacken by mid to
late afternoon, expected winds to be on the decrease from west to
east.

Blowing snow/visibilities: Forecast soundings still show the
potential to mix down 35-45+ kt wind gusts thru the early
afternoon hours. However, with these caliber winds already in
place and surface observations still generally showing
visibilities in the 1 to 2 mile range, wonder if we are going to
see more drifting snow rather than snow being truly lofted and
causing widespread visibility issues. As the daytime hours arrive,
should start to see better lapse rates in the lowest 500m of the
atmosphere that may help loft snow better, but even these values
in the most recent short range guidance are much less impressive
than was shown yesterday at this time. Another complicating factor
could be the snow characteristic with Friday evening's snow may
have been a bit too wet and has since allowed things to congeal
more than expected. Currently seeing flurries falling out of
patchy stratus that have help drive down visibilities in some
areas, with RH progs showing this potential to continue into the
early afternoon hours. All this to say, beginning to have some
serious doubts about how widespread true ground blizzard
conditions will be across the warning area. As with most ground
blizzard situations, the worst impacts will be limited to outlying
areas that still have an exposed powdery snow cover in place.

Headlines: Because of the above mentioned concerns, gave a lot of
consideration to downgrading the ongoing Blizzard Warning to a
Winter Weather Advisory for all but the Buffalo Ridge region of SW
MN and then southward through the Iowa Great Lakes where more
snow fell earlier this evening. After perusing area webcams and
observations, would feel more comfortable letting the day shift
reevaluate things once the sun comes up before making any drastic
changes to the ongoing warning. Conditions in open country may be
worse than what is being shown by observing station visibilities.
Did go ahead and shorten up the ending time to 3 pm for all
warnings/advisories along/west of I-29.

By tonight, winds should retreat below the 10-20 mph threshold,
although with plenty of cold air in place, will likely see wind
chills approach/exceed advisory level criteria, mainly for
locations north of I-90. After the midnight hours, will see some
light snow filter in from central SD in response to an upper level
jet streak overhead in tandem with a mid level frontal boundary.
Better forcing/frontal dynamics looks to set up generally along
and north of the I-90 corridor.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Light snow largely across the northern half of our coverage area
will continue into Monday morning before fading into the afternoon
hours. While QPF amounts look fairly light with this system,
efficient snow ratios should be enough to produce a swath of 1 to 3
inches in the previously mentioned area. Temperatures Monday will be
stuck in the single digits and may even struggle to get above zero
in areas near the Buffalo Ridge where a very deep snow pack is in
place.

Similar scenario for Monday night into Tuesday with a stripe of
light snow, mainly across the northern half of our CWA. Yet another
chance at some snowfall Wednesday night into Thursday as a compact
shortwave moves into the region. Some signs at a bit more impactful
system by late in the week as an upper level trough moves out of the
western US, although details are still quite fuzzy that far out.

Overall, fairly zonal flow aloft will keep the potential for light
and quick hitting snow events through the week and also prevent any
meaningful warm up. Temperatures through the period remain well
below normal.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)

Blowing snow will remain a concern through this afternoon, with
wind gusts to 30 to 40 kt across the region. The BLSN will cause
reductions in visibility to 1/2sm at times, especially along and
east of I-29. Winds finally decrease after 22z, and will be closer
to 10 to 15 kt by 03z. While the BLSN threat diminishes, the next
band of light snowfall spread across the region along and north of
I-90 after midnight, and exits by the end of the TAF period.
Expect MVFR ceilings and MVFR to IFR visibility with the light
snowfall after 06z.
