very early Thursday morning which will likely cause blizzard and

morning Thursday through the afternoon. This should allow the
whiteout conditions to end, but blowing and drifting snow will
still be likely. The winds will further diminish around sunset

Main focus for today will actually be on tonight/early Thursday, as
arctic front plunges south through the region.

This arctic front is slated to drop into the Highway 14 corridor by
around midnight/06Z tonight, then barrel southward and exit our
southern counties prior to 6am/12Z Thursday. Models continue to show
pockets of 40+ kts atop the post-frontal mixed layer, especially in
central and eastern portions of the CWA. Winds atop this layer not
always able to reach the surface, but in this case, expect a band of
post-frontal stratus/flurries to follow the front southward, and
this light precipitation can help draw the stronger winds to the
surface. Thus, anticipate a few hour window of potential wind gusts
of 35-40+ kts immediately behind the front late tonight, coincident
with the flurries as they move south between 06Z-12Z. RAP wind gust
guidance seemed to capture the potential gusts best, so have largely
followed this in the areas where flurries are possible. Elsewhere
also nudged toward some higher wind guidance, but remained below max
possible. Strong/gusty winds persist into Thursday, especially in
our MN/IA counties, while areas west of I-29 see slight decrease in
speeds as surface high begins to build into the Dakotas.

Given the strong winds, the biggest question is how susceptible is
the existing snowpack to being lofted enough to produce significant
visibility restrictions in blowing snow. Area of greatest concern is
north of I-90, where heavy band of powdery snow fell late last week.
Temperatures have remained quite chilly since then, so likely have
not been able to develop a firm crust on top of the snow. But unlike
areas farther north of Highway 14, and well southeast of our area in
Iowa, both of which have received appreciable snow in the past day
or two, the snow in our area has had a chance to settle a bit over
the past few days. Thus there remains some uncertainty in potential
for true blowing snow with very low visibility vs. just significant
drifting. Given this uncertainty, will issue a Winter Storm Watch
for possible blizzard conditions along and north of a line from
Huron, to Madison SD, to Worthington/Jackson MN. Areas south of
there either did not receive as much snow late last week, or had a
prolonged period of freezing drizzle over the past 36 hours that
potentially crusted over the snow enough to inhibit significant
blowing snow, so no headlines there at this point.

As far as temperatures, today will be a relatively mild day ahead of
this boundary, with light to moderate westerly flow and highs mainly
in the 20s to lower 30s. Coolest readings will be in areas with the
deeper snow pack along MN Hwy 30 in southwest Minnesota.

Temperatures not expected to drop too quickly ahead of the boundary
this evening, but strong cold advection behind the front will result
in lows digits below zero north, and above zero south, with little
recovery expected during the day Thursday. With the gusty winds and
sub-zero temperatures, likely will see wind chills of -20 to -30F in
our northeast areas late tonight/Thursday, and will have a mention
of this in the Winter Storm Watch as well.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Northwest flow persists across the region through this upcoming
weekend, leading to series of weak clipper-type systems dropping
southeast across the forecast area. Each of these will move through
quickly, but bring the potential for light accumulations of snow to
parts of the area. Deterministic GFS and ECMWF similar in timing and
location of these chances Friday morning, and again Saturday night,
with moderate support from GFS ensemble members as well, so have
bumped pops up a bit from blended guidance in these periods. Again,
not looking for much snowfall, but could be enough to lightly coat
the roads.

Stronger wave slated to slide across the region late Sunday/Sunday
night, and 00Z runs of GFS/ECMWF both showing potential for greater
accumulations across northeast portions of the forecast area with
this wave. Indications are that this snow would not be quite so dry
and powdery as recent systems, as we see some modest warming ahead
of the wave on Sunday. But with increased northwest winds possible
behind the wave late Sunday night/Monday, will carry a mention of
patchy blowing snow through Monday as well.

No major pattern shift in sight through the end of this forecast
period, or even through the end of next week, so looks like we will
continue to see potential for these weak waves and continued below
normal temperatures as we close out January late next week.
