Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 615 PM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 347 PM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 A decent shortwave sliding southward through the Upper Mississippi Valley this afternoon will drive some slightly cooler air into the area tonight. Some models suggesting stratus developing with this cooler air, but current satellite not showing much to our north, so it may be an artifact of the cooling, thus confidence is low. Winds do become light overnight, and there will again be a risk of at least patchy fog across the area. Lows will run from the lower 20s north to upper 20s south. Biggest change for Thursday is that models have come in cooler for areas from Interstate 90 northward where snow cover still exists, and looking at highs mainly lower 40s over that area. To the south, it will continue to be milder as afternoon temperatures climb into the mid 50s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 347 PM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Latest guidance has come in cooler into the beginning of next week, and with nighttime temperatures falling below freezing (the exception being Saturday night), snow melt will slow down a bit across the area - possibly helping to alleviate some of the most serious flooding concerns. A backdoor cold front slides through the area on Thursday night, dropping temperatures on Friday a couple of degrees as compared to Thursday. Still looking at the next system to affect our area on Saturday into Sunday, and although there are some model differences, the dominate consensus still suggests that precipitation amounts will be light with the better forcing remaining to our south and west. Strong surface high pressure and upper level riding build into the region for the beginning of next week. This will bring a dry period through the middle of next week. After a colder day on Monday, temperatures will gradually warm for Tuesday and Wednesday. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Thursday evening) Issued at 614 PM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Fog should develop tonight and some localized IFR conditions will be possible.
