AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 606 PM CDT Wed May 29 2019 .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Thursday) Issued at 322 PM CDT Wed May 29 2019 Distinct low pressure circulation evident near the extreme southeast corner of the forecast area this afternoon, with persistent band of showers in the mid-level deformation zone northwest of the low. This band has shown a weakening trend over the past hour or two, a trend which is indicated in the CAMs, which refocus the potential for scattered showers and storms into northwest Iowa into early this evening. With the proximity of the surface low, cannot completely rule out development for brief funnels, but given that the low will be just east of our area, think greater risk of this will likewise be east of our counties. Beyond this evening, looks pretty quiet into Thursday and Thursday night, as the upper trough slowly slides east through Iowa, and ridging begin to work into our area from the west. Subtle surface boundary indicated in the high-res models dropping south toward the Highway 14 corridor late Thursday afternoon/evening, triggering a few diurnal showers or storms to our north. In general, would expect subsidence with the rising heights, along with the overall diurnal downtrend after 00Z, would limit extent of precipitation reaching our forecast area, so will keep pops rather minimal during the afternoon/early evening hours. Temperatures on Thursday expected to be much warmer than these past couple of days, with lows still in the 50s, but highs warming into the upper 70s to lower 80s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday Night through Wednesday) Issued at 322 PM CDT Wed May 29 2019 Another warm day expected Friday, with west-southwest flow ahead of the next upper wave and associated weak cool front helping to push temperatures into the 80s across the forecast area. This wave will bring another chance of showers and scattered storms to the region Friday night into Saturday. Localized rainfall amounts of 0.25-0.50 inch are possible, but with rain expected to be more progressive, areal averages should be quite a bit lighter than with recent systems. Although slightly cooler air works into the area for the weekend, should see a stretch of temperatures near to above seasonal normals through the middle of next week. Upper flow pattern remains split, with southern stream trough rather stagnant over the Desert Southwest, while dominant northern stream trough moves slowly east across the Canadian maritime provinces. Our region transitions from slight ridging between these two systems, to more quasi-zonal flow early next week, which allows a couple of weak waves to slide across the area. With models differing on the timing of these waves, will let the occasional low-mid range chance pops ride through the first part of the work week. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Thursday evening) Issued at 559 PM CDT Wed May 29 2019 Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to bring MVFR ceilings at KSUX this evening.
