.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 308 AM CDT Sat May 18 2019

Showers and thunderstorms moving through quickly early this morning
with some short lived heavy rain and wind gusts to around 40 mph the
main concerns. Once this moves through drier air in the mid and
upper levels will keep most of the area dry today. The exception
will be the far eastern CWA this afternoon where a little surface
based instability may allow scattered showers and thunderstorms to
develop. A more organized area of rain and thunderstorms is likely
to spread north as well as the upper level wave pivots northward
into Iowa. This will aid in setting up a bit of a trowal which will
bring an increase in rain chances to the area late Saturday night
into Sunday. The highest chances will be across southwest MN. An
isolated severe storm is possible late this afternoon into the
evening near Storm Lake and Spencer IA but the chances are fairly
low.

Temperatures will be a bit warmer in some locations today as the
system wraps up and westerly winds develop. The area will be
fighting stratus through the day so peak mixing is not expected.
However with mixing most areas will climb into the 60s with 70s in
northwest IA. With clouds and an increasing northerly wind lows will
remain in the 40s.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

By Sunday the precipitation will gradually diminish as the trowal
weakens. Moisture appears as though it will be below the dendritic
layer so spotty showers should be the main threat. The models do
indicate some very weak instability to support the showers with only
scattered coverage. It will still be a cold day with north winds 15
to 25 mph and highs in the 40s. Precipitation will not be heavy and
thunderstorms are not expected.

Sunday night into Monday a fast moving ridge aloft will move through
as the wave exits. This should bring a period of drier conditions,
but unfortunately it will still be on the cool side with highs in
the 50s. The models are a little slower moving this ridge through so
the rain chances spreading northeast into the area may hold off
until the afternoon.

Monday night through Tuesday night will be our next round of rain
and thunderstorms. Low pressure will crash onto the Western High
Plains late Monday night into Tuesday morning and increase south to
southeast low to mid level flow into the region. While moderate to
heavy rainfall appears likely with this system severe weather
chances look to remain low. The latest model soundings show near
moist adiabatic conditions which do not support strong updrafts.
Tuesday will again see highs in the 50s.

Wednesday through Friday sees some decent model divergence so we
will have decreased confidence. Overall appears that the low will
lift north of the area then drift east, but not all runs lift the
low north of the area. If it does we will see highs in the 60s and
lower 70s but if not it would be at least 10 degrees cooler and
there would be better chances for daytime rainfall. Will have a good
chance for rain in Thursday night but again, confidence4 marginal.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning)

Low pressure will move through the area today and northwest winds
will develop on the backside of the system. This will usher MVFR
to IFR ceilings into the area. There is a chance for thunderstorms
after 21Z today, mainly east of highway 60. Gusty northwest winds
can be expected Saturday night into Sunday morning.

looking like the most likely timeframes.
