.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Sunday night)

Outflow pool from overnight convection continues to chill portions
of southwest MN and east central SD with overcast skies and temps in
the mid to upper 50s at mid afternoon, while south of the main warm
front across the lower Missouri River corridor, temps have vaulted
into the lower to mid 70s.  Dew points have pushed into the mid 50s,
and even with mid-level lapse rates a bit more stable than last
night, there is still enough for up to 800-1000 J/kg MLCAPE, which
at the time is at least weakly capped per the flat cumulus fields in
place.

Watching a significant wave across the southern plains starting to
lift northeastward with leading weak impulse now beginning to slide
toward the Missouri River.  Increase in forcing bringing a scattered
coverage of elevated showers and isolated thunder across northeast
NE, and as the main wave progresses northeastward tonight, coverage
of such should continue to increase. Hi-Res models and operational
lower res models were earlier in significant disagreement on
location and progression of precipitation, with the former much more
eastward progressive during the evening, and the latter holding the
band in place closer to centered on I-29. Based on the stronger
component of larger scale forcing, would tend to favor the more
westward axis within larger scale deformation. Some areas of the
west of the James could miss out on much of the precip, with a
better chance coming in with the lower level baroclinicity/front
later in the night. A couple of storms may produce some small hail.

Likely that in the near/post frontal environment, will see
development of lower clouds and some fog once again, especially post
frontal which should last into Sunday morning.  However, after
clouds and showers along this feature during the morning, should get
some fairly good subsidence which will flush out the clouds and
promote good mixing, and thus have raised some expected highs for
areas from the James through Missouri Rivers, where some readings
could again approach 70.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday Night through Saturday)

Monday will be a well-mixed and sunny day, as a weak wave in
northwest flow passes north of the area. Best day of the week, by
far. Monday night, will start to see development of a tight mid-
level baroclinic zone toward the Missouri River within upper
ridging between jets to the northeast and southwest. A couple of
disturbances progress along this boundary from later Monday night
into early Wednesday, each attempting to kick up a little better
rainfall chance. As a large upper wave looms to the southwest by
early Wednesday and cyclogenesis initiates in the western plains,
will gradually see an increasing threat for precipitation.

Nothing has really settled out in terms of the significant mid to
late week system, other than it exists in almost every model
solution.  It is significant and of concern, first and foremost, by
the potential for heavy QPF - in whatever form ends up falling in
whatever location at whatever timing.  While operational GFS and
Canadian both had a significant northward shift with warmer temps
aloft into the forecast area of southeast SD/southwest MN/northwest
IA/northeast NE, while the ECMWF decided that the abandoned forecast
position of a more southward track was a better place to go. Most
solutions a touch slower with the main system, setting up a longer
period of impacts into Thursday and Thursday night, which is
reflected in ensembles that remain all over the board.  Story of
this system - do not pay so much attention to details, but rather
the fact it exists and warrants a watchful eye over the next few
days.  After all, the three parts that will make up this system are
either just coming on shore along southern AK or out in the central
Pacific. Much will change.

Scattered showers will continue through the night into Sunday
morning, but the more intense showers and thunderstorms across
northwest Iowa should weaken through 6z. Some IFR conditions in
fog and stratus will be possible down the Big Sioux Valley into
southwest MN later tonight into Sunday morning. A cool front will
swing through late Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon and
increase northwest winds and scour out any cloud cover.
