Finally getting some light snow reaching the ground in Ottertail
County as the lower levels finally saturate. The slow northward
progression of snow into the CWA from the south will continue. Did
adjust QPF upward in the far southern border area to account for
observed snow and liquid in Havana as well as in northeastern SD.
Snow ratios are around 12:1 which is a tad higher than previous
thoughts due to warm temperatures. Bump up puts QPF along the SD
border in the 1.25 to 1.5 inch range and keeps snow in the 12-18
inch for storm total, but due to convective elements where exactly
the heaviest amounts end up is still rather uncertain. Will keep
headlines as they are for now and monitor.

.SHORT TERM...(Today thru Friday)

Short range models are targeting this afternoon and evening for
the heavier snow in our fcst area. RUC/HRRR seem a tad farther
west with the upper low than the global models. Two areas of heavy
precipitation this early morning. One is moving north thru SE MN
and western WI and is mainly in the 850 mb warm advection and 850
mb frontogensis region. This is moving north. Another area of
heavy precipitation is north-northeast of the upper low moving
into SE SD. This heavier precip is progged to move north and then
northwest into SE ND/WC MN more toward midday/aftn and then north
this evening. There will be some light snow ahead of the main
push, but very dry air to overcome as dew pts over parts of
eastern fcst area in the single digits, from Detroit Lakes to Park
Rapids with teens many other areas. This airmass will take a while
to saturate. This drier air is advecting west...and will keep any
precipitation very light or non-existent ahead of the main push.
Short range models do still indicate sufficient precipitation
amounts to generate the heavy snowfall totals as forecasted. But I
can see where this may not come to pass, if dry air hangs on
longer and/or main push of snow is weaker than expected. Also HRRR
in particular indicates dry slot working into SE fcst area for a
time this aftn and thus lower totals Park Rapids/Wadena areas
where we do have 8-12 or more forecast. So bottom line no changes
to headlines and minor changes to amounts, but certainly a far
from certain forecast in terms of amounts of snowfall.
Snowfall will lighten overnight into Friday but still fall lightly
in weakening deformation zone west of the upper low.
Winds will be in the sustained 20-30 mph range with gusts to 40
mph at times in SE ND and parts of WC MN but more from an
northeast direction and no cold advection. Thus reduced vsbys more
from heavy falling snow vs blowing snow. Thus will not get too
intense with the blowing snow part, but heavy snow rates at times
will reduce vbys.

A period of dry weather will follow the late week storm impacting
portions of the upper midwest. H500 pattern finally in better
agreement between models early in period, with GFS now in line with
the short wave ridge depicted by the ECMWF. Models remain in decent
agreement (for upper level pattern) through late Sunday night.
Challenge for next week continues to be timing issues with early
week wave as GFS continues a quick shot of precip on Monday
afternoon/evening...and associated front moving into valley Monday
night...whereas ECMWF continues to be a bit slower with precip
moving across region late Monday evening.
Expect afternoon highs back into the 40s with increased sunshine,
while overnight lows dip back into the 10s and 20s...warming into
the 30s by Tuesday night. Models continue to keep southern and
southeast zones in the 30s for weekend highs, as they assume fresh
snow with the expected winter storm in the short term. By mid next
week, temps do climb into the upper 40s to low 50s across the area
with any precip limited to the far east and southeast as the rest of
Minnesota sees some precipitation.

Flooding from snowmelt continues along Red River tributaries in
Minnesota. Some rivers have crested faster than expected including
the Red Lake River at Crookston and Highlanding, with the Snake
River at Alvarado and Upstream of Warren seeing their crest already
as well. A few rivers are experiencing backwater effects from the
main stem Red River including the Wild Rice River in Minnesota at
Hendrum, the Marsh River at Shelly, and the Sand Hill River at
Climax. Snow melt from additional snowfall expected today through
Friday morning may cause a second crest in water levels or continue
the duration of high water in the future, apparent in the Buffalo
River and South Branch Buffalo River forecasts. In the meantime the
South Branch Buffalo River at Sabin has fallen below flood stage.
Flooding from snowmelt continues along Red River. The Red River at
Halstad is nearing crest today, although there has been a slight
increase in forecast crest to around 39 feet. Water levels at
Halstad are expected to remain above major flood stage until Sunday
night. Snowmelt from additional snowfall expected tonight through
Friday morning in the southern Red River Basin may cause a second
crest in water levels or continue the duration of high water in the
future. Crest is not yet within the forecast range at Pembina (ie
crest expected more than 7 days away).
Flooding from snowmelt continues along Red River tributaries in
North Dakota. Backwater is affecting locations along the Sheyenne
and Maple Rivers preventing flood waters from moving out of the area
effectively prolonging the duration of flood.
