Fog this morning continues across the southern Red River Valley
and into west central MN as weak warm advection continues along a
stationary front running from north to south through the Red River
Valley. Patches of dense fog are still possible across northwest
MN through noon, but most locations have improved above advisory
criteria.
The main concern heading into the afternoon as precipitation moves
into the southern RRV. Low level warm advection is expected to
continue in the ND/SD/MN tri-state area and will warm temperatures
to just above freezing. Because of this, a tight gradient of
above/below freezing temperatures is likely across the southern
Valley and may lead to a variety of precipitation types during the
afternoon hours, including freezing rain and sleet.
Surface trends will be closely monitored as precip moves northward
out of South Dakota. For now, the main message is the possible
variety in precipitation type, and subsequent uncertainty in snow
amounts, for the southern Red River Valley for this afternoon and
evening.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Upper level trough over NM will move near Omaha by 12Z Thu. A mix of
rain and snow will move north out of SD later this morning or
early this afternoon. Mostly rain and some freezing rain will
occur roughly east of the line from Lidgerwood ND to Baudette MN.
The heaviest snow will fall roughly west of this line. Also north
winds will increase this evening and create blizzard conditions in
the western zones. The blizzard conditions will shift east
overnight. Expect wind gusts to 40 to 50 mph. Instabilities are
expected with some Mucape under 50j/kg noted near the dry slot and
along the heavy snow band.
Dry slot will move into the southeast zones later tonight with a
temporary reprieve from heavier rain in the southeast zones.
Farther east, the rain/snow line makes everything more uncertain.
Northwestern MN could see some heavy snow, but again there will
be a tight gradient along the rain/snow line which placement is
uncertain. Will keep the watch going in our east.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Thursday...Highly impactful winter system will be ongoing Thursday
morning, with deformation band precip across eastern ND into
northwestern MN. The heaviest QPF amounts will taper off from west
to east during the day on Thursday, but will bring a few more
inches of snow to the heavy snow band that looks to be centered on
a line from Valley City to Grand Forks to Roseau. Confidence in
more than 6 inches of snow, and likely more, in this area is high.
Less confidence in snow amounts in the Devils Lake Basin, where
there will be a tight gradient of very little and heavy snow.
However, there will be wind and temps did not get as warm on
Tuesday as farther east, so is still blowable. Winds will be
strong as the pressure gradient tightens. Cold air advection is
not super impressive, but there should be enough mixing during the
daylight hours to have some momentum transfer from the 40 to 45
kt winds at 925mb. Possibly even up to 850mb where winds are 50
kts plus. Even with warmer temperatures than recent systems, there
will be a large amount of blowing snow. Blizzard warning
throughout the day on Thursday for most of eastern ND and the far
northwestern MN counties where there is more open country.
Friday through Tuesday...Northwest flow aloft and less active
conditions for a time, although colder again. A few weak shortwave
clippers will move through, but there is a lot of variation between
models on timing and any precip amounts should be light. Kept
blended solution. Temps will be slightly below seasonal averages.

This afternoon, IFR ceilings are expected to prevail across
northwest MN and the southern Red River Valley, including FAR,
BJI, and TVF. Rain will spread into the southern Red River valley
late this afternoon, affecting FAR then west central MN and BJI.
As precipitation spreads north, it will transition to a wintry/icy
mix and eventually snow overnight for these locations. With winds
increasing at FAR overnight, blizzard/LIFR conditions will
develop.
For sites along and northwest of a BDE to TVF to BAC line,
including GFK and DVL, expect conditions to deteriorate with
snow starting this evening. Blizzard conditions with LIFR cigs
and vsbys will develop late tonight across the area as north winds
and snowfall rates increase.
LIFR conditions are expected to persist from late tonight through
Thursday at most sites.
