.UPDATE...
Issued at 1040 AM CST Sat Feb 2 2019
Extended mention of flurries across our north into the afternoon
period based on radar and obs trends. Saturation may not actually
decrease too much on latest model soundings and this may actually
continue into tonight along with possible fog redevelopment.
&&
.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 342 AM CST Sat Feb 2 2019
Little impacts today with light north winds this morning bringing
some scattered flurries to the Devils Lake basin and northern
valley which will dissipate by mid morning as saturation
diminishes. Similar to yesterday light snow chances exist along
the border as another upper wave brings snow to southern Canada.
Lake of the Woods area may see some period of light snow as a
result. Winds will be light today trying to turn to the east or
southeast in MN where temps will reach into the 20s this
afternoon. Where the north winds have pushed across E ND expecting
recovery only into the teens. Overnight north winds will increase
as a result from the developing SFC low in the central plains.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 342 AM CST Sat Feb 2 2019
Sunday brings the onset of a potent winter storm that will impact
the region beginning around midday. A strong H5 low moves out of
the Rockies and into northeastern Colorado Sunday morning with
good moisture advection along the forward flank of the system.
This will override deep cold air in place over the northern
Plains, allowing efficient snow production within the DGZ. Western
portions of the CWA will see an onset of snow around midday with
snow overspreading the entire CWA from west to east through the
afternoon and evening. Widespread snowfall totals of 4 to 9 inches
are possible with the lighter amounts remaining south of the I-94
corridor. Areas along and north of I-94 could see anywhere from 6
to 9 inches of snow over the Sunday night through Monday
afternoon time frame. Blowing and drifting snow is possible as
winds increase through the overnight hours out of the north and
northwest. Current guidance is bringing wind speeds up into the 20
to 25 mph range with gusts to near 30 mph from early Sunday
morning through late Monday evening. Snowfall will end on Monday
from west to east through the afternoon and early evening hours.
Another surge of Arctic air will filter into the region Sunday
night into Monday.
A relatively weak shortwave will bring a slight chance of very light
snow through the CWA on Tuesday as reinforcing CAA continues into
the region. Highs will only reach the single digits below zero for
areas west of the Red River with lower single digits above zero to
the east.
The next storm system is shrouded in uncertainty as model guidance
has varied greatly in the past 24 to 36 hours. Another H5 low is
forecast to traverse the central Plains next week and potentially
bring another chance of snow and wind to the region on Wednesday
through Friday. High temperatures during this period will be within
5 degrees either side of zero degrees with lows in the negative
teens to near negative 20 degrees.
&&
.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night)
Issued at 1130 PM CST Fri Feb 1 2019
Looks like ceilings will be up and down throughout the next 24
hours. Even looking at tonight, there are a few spots of IFR
ceilings, while not too far away it is clear. Will generally keep
things in the MVFR range with a few spots of flurries or light
snow. Winds have turned to the north now north of a Roseau to
Hillsboro to Valley City line and are fairly steady. By Saturday
they will begin to switch around toward the east-southeast.
