Strong north winds continue to gust up to 45 mph, strongest in the
Red River Valley. Widespread blowing snow continues to reduce
visibility down to 1/4 mile or less in the valley and generally
1/2 mile to to 2 miles outside of the valley.
Travel is not advised through much of eastern ND and the Red
River Valley, per MN and ND DOT partners. North Dakota Interstate
29 is closed from Grand Forks to the South Dakota border.
UPDATE Issued at 1029 AM CST Thu Feb 7 2019
Strong north winds remain sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up
to 40 mph along the Red River Valley. Snow will begin to taper off
from west to east this afternoon, but strong winds will persist
through this evening causing blizzard conditions to continue along
the valley.
Travel remains difficult to impossible through much of eastern ND
and portions of northwest and west central MN. In open country,
less than 1/4 mile visibility has been the rule this morning. Part
of North Dakota Interstate 94 remains closed due to blizzard
conditions, eastbound from Jamestown to Fargo and westbound from
Fargo to Valley City. Additionally Interstate 29 has been closed
from Fargo to Grand Forks with no travel advised across much of
eastern ND due to blizzard conditions.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Wind speeds increased substantially after midnight with gusts at
GFK frequently approaching or exceeding 35 mph. Widespread reports
of visibility reductions to one quarter mile or less. Radar
returns are relatively light at the moment with light to moderate
snow reported several locations. Heavier bands still limited to
the southwestern portions of the CWA.
Primary focus of heavier snow shifts eastward through the morning
hours along an axis of 850mb FGEN. Mesoscale models remain in
relatively good agreement regarding timing and precipitation, but
winds are not as well represented at the moment. Winds this morning
have increased faster than most guidance suggested. Still looking at
ongoing snow and blowing snow through the afternoon hours with a
good consensus for snow ending from west to east around 21Z. Winds
will diminish slowly through the evening and early overnight hours.
Blowing snow remains likely through the afternoon and into the early
evening, especially within the Red River Valley.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Models in fair agreement with general synoptic pattern through the
extended period. To start arctic cold will bring teens and single
digits below zero for highs Friday as 1040+mb surface high pressure
traverses the area. Temperatures will moderate some for the weekend
as the colder air shifts east with high pressure ridge axis
continuing to bring drier weather. Ahead of the next system
temperatures will warm into the teens and single digits above on
Monday and Tuesday. Snow chances increase Monday as strong system
moves across the southern and central plains allowing the northern
fringe of precip with possible inverted trough across the Dakotas.
Depending on the timing of the system and how upper levels evolve a
prolonged period of snow appears possible across the region with
snow chances lasting through Tuesday. Strong upper level forcing
remains well south with wide impacting snowfall amounts not
expected.

Near whiteout conditions will continue at GFK and FAR into the early
evening as snow and blowing snow combine with strong north winds
gusting up to 35 kts to reduce visibilities. Elsewhere, expect
mainly 1/2 mile to 2 mile visibility. IFR cigs will prevail
through the afternoon with some MVFR cigs developing, especially
near DVL. Conditions will improve tonight as snow and winds taper
off from west to east and MVFR and eventually VFR cigs building in
overnight. Temperatures will fall into the teens and lower 20s
below zero overnight.
