What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind chill warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Grand Forks, ND wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind chill warning went out at Jan 26, 11:44 AM CST, 2 hours 58 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 26, 11:44 AM CST, 2 hours 58 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Grand Forks ND
1144 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

.UPDATE Issued at 947 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Skies clearing and flurries ending as arctic high ridge axis
builds into the area from north to south this morning. High temps
in the single digits above in the south and negative single digits
in the north.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 347 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Two short waves/jet streaks were diving south over northeast ND and
the other over eastern MT. Both systems were producing light snow
over the eastern Dakotas and eastern MT. Radar indicated very light
snow or flurries. Precip was moving to the southeast about 30 knots.
Winds will become northwest today - strong winds are not expected.
Area of warm advection will occur this morning then shift southeast
with cold front moving through. Weak surface ridge will be located
over eastern zones by 12Z Sun. Return flow will occur over the rest
of the forecast area late tonight. Lowest temps will be in the
eastern zones Sun morning.

Wind chill advisory continues until 9 am CST.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 347 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Sunday and Monday...Models are coming into fairly good agreement on
a potent clipper system moving through the Northern Plains during
the later part of the weekend. Still some variation in the exact
track of the surface low, but overall there has been a trend to
bring the higher QPF further east into our CWA. There is some decent
850mb frontogenesis Sunday afternoon and night that is at least
partially congruent with the broad synoptic scale lift. Lots of
omega around the prime dendritic growth zone, and high GEFS
probabilities for QPF amounts over 0.25 inches and even some
possibility of over 0.50 inches liquid. Add in the fact that snow
ratios will be high with our cold temps, and chances look good for 6-
8 inches of snow accumulation along with some wind across our west
and south Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. Southeasterly
gradient looks tight and there will be some blowing, although still
some uncertainty with the track of the surface low. Better chances
for a lot of blowing snow may be later Sunday night as we get cold
air advection behind the system. Have a winter storm watch for most
of our eastern ND counties and west central MN. Included some
blizzard condition wording for the far southwestern counties as they
have the tightest gradient and best timing with the cold air
advection, but may need that wording elsewhere as well later on.

Tuesday through Thursday...Extremely cold air sets in behind the
clipper system as the Hudson bay low drops southward into the Great
Lakes region. Arctic surface high pressure will be building in, and
dangerous wind chills of -40 or even colder will be possible each
night/early morning through Thursday.

Friday...The models start to bring 500mb heights back up as the
Hudson low moves east. There is some variation between models on how
fast warmer air starts to move back into the region, with the ECMWF
hanging onto the arctic air a bit longer. However, there does seem
to be some indication of moderation of temps with a return above the
zero mark.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)
Issued at 1119 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

North winds 7 to 15kts today with VFR conditions as skies have
cleared out. VFR will persist this evening into the overnight.
Then from west to east MVFR CIGs with -SN will spread into the
DVL, FAR and GFK TAF sites from 12Z to 18Z tomorrow morning.
Additionally with SE winds 12 to 18kt gusts to 20 to 25kts by
midday some BLSN is also possible. TVF and BJI set to remain VFR
for this period.
