Issued at 627 AM CDT Sat May 18 2019 Rain showers have moved as far north as north as far SE Grand Forks county, although the northern edge of persistent showers is along the Highway 200 corridor. As expected, a southern edge of weakening activity is right along the ND/SD border and should move further north towards Wahpeton before potentially filling back in. Northern edge still expected to encounter drier air north of Highway 2 and should not spread much further north. Lightning remains south of CWA. Minor POP updates to address current trends but no significant changes needed. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 307 AM CDT Sat May 18 2019 A rain event across the south continues to unfold with the heaviest rain roughly aligned with a band of H775/H800 frontogenetic forcing. Modeled QPF continues to indicate highest precip rates in the pre-today period (remainder of Fri night)...with the band of FG forcing lifting north of the southern tier of counties in our CWA aft 12Z. The forcing also weakens through the day. Through 12Z, expect hardest rainfall to occur across southeastern ND with a dry slot working its way into w cntrl MN. The band will lift to about as far north as the Highway 2 corridor, with much less confidence in measurable precip north of this corridor. Another issue will be northward extent of convection, which decreased total lightning after midnight and currently no further north than far southern Grant Co, MN. Current thinking is isold thunder mainly along the southernmost tier of counties in our CWA. Surface low over next 24-36 hours will move easterly from Sioux Falls area into southern WI on Sunday, shifting rain back to the south this afternoon and tonight...and prolonging precip over w cntrl MN through the day on Sunday. This will keep strong northeast winds throughout the day today...with overall wet and windy conditions across most of the south. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 307 AM CDT Sat May 18 2019 The extended forecast continues the below normal temperatures across the northern plains as the mean 500mb trough over the SW US and ridge over SE US persists. Sunday night through Tuesday will be dry with SFC high pressure and upper level ridging. During the day Tuesday 500mb trough lifts into the central plains with moisture streaming into the northern plains WAA lift will bring the next round of showers to the southern areas and will lift northward Tuesday night into Wednesday. Tuesday appears to be another day where dry easterly flow will impede precip reaching the surface during the WAA regime. Models in fair agreement with lifting upper low from Nebraska over ND Wednesday into Thursday providing widespread forcing producing rainfall across the region. GEFS ensemble totals for the Tuesday night through Thursday time frame showing 0.50" to 1.50" spread with the higher amounts in the south. Model solns diverge on the evolution of the upper pattern and placement of 500mb forcings for the end of the week with potential for another round of rainfall though confidence remains low on occurrence and details. Will see temps range from 60s to low 50s for highs for the week with lows primarily in the 40s.
