.UPDATE...

Initial wave of precip has cleared most of the North GA counties
with a temporary lull in activity. Have therefore pared back pops
significantly for a good portion of the overnight. Could still see
some activity over Central GA overnight but still expect most
instability and therefore severe threat to remain south of our
area. Next wave of precipitation will be along the actual front
toward daybreak Thu for NW portions of the area. Pops still look
on track for this along the with the mention of isolated thunder
and possible isolated severe storms. No other changes planned for
the update.

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 338 PM EDT Wed Oct 30 2019/

SHORT TERM /Tonight through Thursday Night/...

Widespread rainfall covers most of north Georgia this afternoon in
association with a surface low lifting northeastward into central
Tennessee along with shortwave energy in southwest flow aloft.
Thunderstorm activity has been more or less nil up to this point in
our area given limited instability; however, as the surface low
continues lifting northward, instability will be on a gradual
increase through the evening and into the overnight hours. While the
more favorable 0-1 km shear has remained displaced north of the
higher surface instability, as instability increases into this
evening into tonight, there will be some risk for an isolated strong
or severe thunderstorm with strong wind gusts or even a brief spin-
up tornado.

The aforementioned surface low will rapidly move into the Great
Lakes region and deepen through tomorrow afternoon as an upper
trough currently over the central Plains rapidly progresses
eastward and transitions into a deepening closed upper low. This
will push the trailing strong cold front rapidly eastward toward
the CWA. A line of convection is expected to form along the cold
front and enter northwest Georgia tomorrow morning and quickly
progress eastward through midday and into the afternoon. While the
highest risk for more widespread severe thunderstorms is expected
to be farther northeast of the area in association with stronger
flow aloft/shear, there will be sufficient shear (30-35 kts of 0-1
km shear) amid several hundred J/kg of SBCAPE for a severe threat
in our area. Again, the primary threat is expected to be damaging
wind gusts along the frontal convective line, but a brief spin-up
tornado is also possible.

Aside from the severe threat, continued moderate to occasionally
heavy rainfall across areas of north Georgia that have already
received significant rainfall will lead to an increased flooding
risk tonight into tomorrow. Given additional forecast QPF of 1-3
inches with isolated higher amounts possible in the north Georgia
mountains, a Flood Watch is in effect for areas of north Georgia
along and north of a Carroll County to Madison County line through
00z Friday.

As the cold front rapidly clears the area from west to east, breezy
northwest winds will usher in a much colder airmass. Based on
current timing, much of the western half of the CWA may be drying
out by trick-or-treat time. Trick-or-treaters will instead be
subjected to windy and cold conditions with forecast wind chills in
the 30s in much of north Georgia by 8-9 PM. This cold airmass will
set the stage for what will be the first freeze of the season for
many areas of north Georgia by Friday morning with widespread lows
in the 30s.

LONG TERM /Friday through Wednesday/...

Extended forecast period continues to look mainly dry and cool.
Medium-range models continue in good agreement through the period
showing a fairly flat and progressive upper pattern with the more
active zone remaining well north of the region and little moisture
to work with. Weaker wave indicated in the southern portion of the
flow approaches late Monday and transits the region Tuesday into
early Wednesday. Moderate moisture return also indicated and chance
PoPs still look good.

Coolest air of the season pushes into the state as the extended
forecast period begins Friday morning with a re-enforcing shot
Saturday night into Sunday. Will likely some freezing temperatures
across portions of north Georgia.

Expect IFR ceilings to prevail across the taf sites for the rest of
the night. The highest risk for tsra will be in the 14-20z time
frame today area wide. MVFR to borderline IFR ceilings will remain
possible through this afternoon until rain ends. Winds will be
mainly ssw 5-8kts until 12z then increasing to sw 10 to 15 kts and
gusty after 12z. Winds will become NW and gusty after 18z today at
12-16kts with gusts 25-28kts.

.DAY ONE...Tonight...

There is a chance for flooding across northern Georgia as multiple
rounds of rain could produce several inches of accumulating
rainfall. Additional rainfall is expected overnight across parts

There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms mainly across
southwest portions of our area into the overnight. The primary
threat will be damaging wind gusts associated with stronger

At 1025 PM EDT...a strong thunderstorm was over Danville, or 7 miles
southeast of Jeffersonville...moving northeast at 15 mph.

  HAZARD...Up to 40 mph wind...frequent cloud to ground lightning
           and heavy rain.

  IMPACT...Expect minor damage to tree limbs and blowing around of
           light...unsecured objects. Heavy rain may cause temporary
           street flooding especially in poor drainage areas.

Some locations in the path of this storm include
