.SYNOPSIS...Warm and breezy weather will give way to cooler
conditions this weekend into early next week as a cold upper-level
storm system drops south across the western United States.
Freezing overnight temperatures will be possible across wind
sheltered valleys in Trinity County by Sunday morning.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Broad upper ridging was occurring over the NERN PAC
early Friday morning. In the low-levels, surface high pressure was
weakening over the Great Basin resulting in the cessation of
moderate offshore winds across NWRN CA. Patches of high cirrus may
spread across the region today...otherwise, mainly clear skies
will support mild afternoon temperatures in the 80s to mid 90s
across the interior, and 60s to low 70s along the coast.

Later this afternoon...short term model guidance shows a weak area
of low pressure will develop south of Cape Mendocino. That feature
will aid in a southerly surge of marine stratus spreading north
along the Mendocino County coast. Stratus is expected to reach
Ukiah this evening, and also develop in the vicinity of Humboldt
Bay during the overnight hours. Model forecast soundings suggest
patchy drizzle may accompany stratus development tonight.

A major pattern change is forecast to occur Friday into the
weekend as an upper low digs south across WA/OR...eventually
carving out a large trough over much of the WRN CONUS Sunday and
Monday. The primary impact with this trough will be substantially
cooler temperatures...particularly over the interior.
Afternoon temperatures in the 60s and 70s are expected, and
overnight valley temperatures in Trinity County will be close to
freezing by Sunday morning. Otherwise, very light shower activity
will be possible Saturday through Monday, followed by drier
conditions on Tuesday as subsidence develops in the wake of the
previously mentioned trough.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions generally prevail across the region
early Thursday morning, with the exception of localized visibility
restrictions in the vicinity of Humboldt Bay due to mist/haze.
VFR conditions will continue into the afternoon, with gusty north-
northwest winds developing along the coast...particularly at KCEC
where gusts from 20-30 kt will be possible. Farther south at
KUKI, south winds are forecast to develop this afternoon into
tonight. The south winds will likely usher low clouds/stratus
northward resulting in low ceilings and reduced visibility.
Marine stratus with mist/drizzle will also be possible near KACV
tonight.

.MARINE...A small area of low pressure is forecast to develop
south of Cape Mendocino today. That feature will effectively shunt
strong northerlies away from the coast resulting in the
dissipation of gale conditions. Steep hazardous seas will persist
through part of today...eventually dissipating during the
afternoon and evening as north winds subside. Going into
Friday...surface high pressure is forecast to restrengthen over
the northeast Pacific. North winds gusting to near gale force will
be possible across all of the coastal waters by Friday
afternoon...and those winds will persist through the first half of
the weekend. Generally weak winds are forecast Sunday into early
next week.
