.SYNOPSIS...Clouds will increase tonight with light rain showers
across Del Norte and northern Humboldt counties on Sunday. Warm
and dry conditions will return during the early to middle
portions of next week, with cool and showery weather possible
by late in the week.

.DISCUSSION...There was less valley cloud cover and fog this
morning. However, there was a patch over Humboldt Bay and the
adjacent coastal waters that was slow to erode due to the
northerly low-level flow piling moisture into the coastal terrain.
Winds have eased a bit near the coast, and the clouds that linger
are thin and hugging the immediate coast downwind to just offshore
Cape Mendocino. Expect low clouds to increase over the coastal
waters and adjacent land areas later this evening, along with the
potential for some coastal fog. Some patches of drizzle are also
possible from Humboldt Bay to Cape Mendocino. High clouds will
thicken and lower after midnight as a weakening frontal system
approaches from the NW.
The bulk of the rainfall with the approaching system will remain
N of the area, and the rains will become more scattered as they
shift S. There may be some weak instability over the N interior
late on Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening, but don't feel there
is much chance of thunder. Due to the progressive nature of this
system and subsidence in the wake of the front, what rains do
occur will rapidly come to an end Sunday evening.
An upper ridge will build over the area early next week, with
warm to hot temperatures returning to the interior. There are
indications that periods of offshore flow will occur early next
week, and this could bring fairly warm temperatures to some
Redwood Coast areas as well.
Long range models are still in good agreement that a large scale
trough will dig over the W portion of the US late next week. This
will bring cooler temperature and the possibility of more
precipitation. Snow levels are forecast to drop to near 6000 feet
by Friday. /SEC

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will prevail well into the evening across
the area as any stratus and patchy fog which had lingered along the
Humboldt coast earlier in the day has mostly dissipated. Breezy
conditions will persist through the afternoon at CEC and ACV, with
NW winds generally in the 10-15 kt range. Expect patchy stratus and
fog to redevelop along the coast overnight, possibly dropping
coastal terminals into the IFR/LIFR range through early Sunday
morning. These conditions should improve rather quickly during the
morning as another trough approaches the coast, likely resulting in
MVFR ceilings into early Sunday afternoon. /CB

.MARINE...Strong northerlies will begin to ease up across the
outer waters later this evening as a trough approaches the coast and
helps to relax the surface pressure gradient. This lull will be most
pronounced north of Cape Mendocino, where diminishing winds and
short period seas should allow Small Craft Advisory conditions to
temporarily come to an end tonight into Sunday. Headlines will
remain in place through the weekend for the outer waters south of
the Cape, with localized gusty conditions and steeper seas also
impacting the inner waters downwind of Cape Mendocino. Northerlies
will quickly re-intensify Sunday night in the wake of the trough,
with Gale Watches remaining in place across the outer waters from
Monday through the middle of next week. This prolonged period of
strong northerlies will contribute to treacherous short period seas
building into the 10 to 12 ft range early next week. Will have to
continue to monitor headline potential for the nearshore waters, as
even if the strongest winds remain offshore the steeper seas being
generated will eventually propagate into the nearshore waters and
lead to potentially hazardous conditions in the Monday/Tuesday time
