.SYNOPSIS...Another storm system will bring a second shot of rain
to the area tonight and Wednesday. Isolated thunderstorms are
possible north of Cape Mendocino. Drier and warmer weather is
expected late in the week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Light rains have already reached Del Norte County
early this afternoon ahead of another digging upper trough and
associated cold front. These rains will gradually spread SE later
this afternoon and this evening. This storm system will be similar
to the one we experienced a couple of days ago. However, there are a
few differences.
Low-level winds have already increased across the northern portion
of the area. As these winds are out of the SSE, coastal downsloping
will act to reduce initial rainfall totals along the immediate
coast, as well as potentially delaying the start time of rains
around the Humboldt Bay area.
Instability appears to be a little higher with this system as well.
Forecast models are in good agreement that modest MUCAPE values will
enter the N portion of the area late this evening and persisting
into Wednesday. Upon closer inspection in BUFKIT, there is the
potential of some very tall, albeit skinny, CAPEs to 20K feet or so.
This should support at least isolated thunderstorm activity,
possibly as far S at the Eureka area.
While area-wide rainfall coverage will be similar to the last event,
it appears that there will be a bit tighter gradient between the
higher totals across the Del Norte mountains and the S portion of
the area. There is the potential for over 2-2.5 inches of rain over
portions of the higher Del Norte terrain, especially in areas that
are traversed by thunderstorms.
Shower activity will gradually taper off through Wednesday evening
as the trough shifts E. If skies clear fast enough early Thursday
morning, some patchy frost is possible near the Ruth area, but
uncertainty is high at this point.
A ridge of high pressure will build over the area for the end of
the week. This will usher in a drying trend with warmer interior
temperatures. Medium range guidance continues to hint at yet
another trough bringing a chance of rain back to the region on
Sunday, although it appears the best potential will be mostly
confined to the extreme N portion of the area and points N. Have
tweaked the PoPs up over the N. /SEC
&&
.AVIATION...Light rain will precede and accompany A cold front as
it moves onto the Del Norte Coast in the late afternoon. By 11
am, CEC was reporting light rain, and the pre-frontal winds had
already begun gusting over 25 knots. Wind shear at 1500-2000 feet
will continue as an aviation hazard especially at CEC until
frontal passage. Weather will move into Mendocino in the late
evening. Later, thunderstorms in the vicinity of CEC are quite
possible as instability increases. Models are indicating that
higher values of CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy),
which is a measure of the amount of energy available for
convection, will be high enough for thunderstorm development
around midnight. A secondary system will bring more showers and a
chance of thunderstorms to the North Coast on Wednesday. /TA

.MARINE...Advisory-level southerly winds will continue over the
waters N of Cape Mendocino into this evening. Winds will be
especially strong from areas adjacent to Pt St George S to near
Trinidad Head, where a period of near gale force gusts will be
probable through early evening. Steep fresh seas will accompany
this period of southerly winds, generally around 5 to 7 ft at 6
seconds. Conditions will be better as usual close to shore and
away from headlands.
Conditions may remain rough for a bit this evening after the winds
relax and while steady rain is pushing through with the front, but
should otherwise improve quickly tonight behind the front.
Isolated thunderstorms will be possible over the N waters late
tonight. Scattered showers will linger Wednesday.
High pressure building offshore will bring a period of
strengthening northerly winds starting late Thursday into
Saturday. A thermal trough close to the coast will likely keep
winds much lighter near shore. A weaker front passing through
around Sunday may also offer hope for a break in the northerlies.
