AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 248 PM PDT Tue Aug 20 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Seasonable temperatures will persist through Wednesday. In addition, there is a chance for light rain Wednesday afternoon and evening over Del Norte County. Warmer temperatures are expected across the interior for the end of the week. && .DISCUSSION...Coastal stratus has mostly dissipated as of early this afternoon, revealing mostly sunny skies across NW California. A few mid/high level clouds are beginning to spread into the region ahead of an upper trough which is poised to move inland over the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday. Forecast thinking regarding this feature is largely unchanged from the past few days as a weak front approaches the far northern portion of the area and brings a chance for light rain to Del Norte and possibly northern Humboldt County. This will be supported by impressive mid August precipitable water values around 1.75 inches, which combined with the synoptic forcing could be enough to generate a few hundredths of an inch of precipitation near the Oregon border and perhaps a few sprinkles as far south as the Humboldt Bay region. The trough will quickly depart Wednesday night, leaving the area beneath quasi-zonal flow on the northern periphery of a subtropical Pacific ridge during the end of the week. Expect interior temperatures to gradually trend upward during this time as heights slowly rise and 850 mb temps increase from the mid to upper teens into the low 20s C. No additional precipitation is expected from Thursday into early next week. /CB && .AVIATION...The near complete erosion of coastal stratus has allowed VFR conditions to prevail across the area this afternoon, with this trend expected to continue well into the evening. The primary forecast challenge will be timing the return of the stratus to coastal terminals tonight. Thinking this could be delayed a bit longer than in recent days given the extent to which low clouds have cleared over the coastal waters today, but the marine layer is still sufficiently deep that stratus should reform at some point, possibly after 06z. Low clouds and patchy fog are then expected to bring IFR/LIFR conditions to ACV and CEC through Wednesday morning, with some improvement expected around 15z. UKI and other inland airfields should remain VFR for the duration of the TAF period. /CB && .MARINE...Relatively tranquil marine conditions will persist for the next 24 hrs or so as a relaxed pressure gradient supports mainly light winds and low seas across the coastal waters. Developing moderate to fresh southerly breezes may clip the far northern outer waters later tonight ahead of the system moving through on Wednesday, but these conditions are mostly expected to remain north of the area. A mid period swell around 7 feet at 12 seconds will enter the waters later on Wednesday, resulting in a more elevated sea state than has been observed in recent days. Strong northerlies will then quickly return Wednesday night behind the departing system, with short period seas rapidly building in response through Thursday. This will likely necessitate the next round of headlines by Thursday morning.
