AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 305 PM PDT Fri Jul 26 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Interior temperatures will remain above normal through the weekend while coastal areas remain near normal. Cooler temperatures are expected by next week. && .DISCUSSION...Stratus is much more prevalent along the North Coast this afternoon than it has been in recent days as a weak shortwave trough passes overhead and the marine layer deepens to around 1500 feet. This has helped keep temperatures a few degrees cooler along the coast today while interior temps generally remain well into the 90s to around 100 degrees in some locations. High pressure will quickly build back into the region tonight behind the departing shortwave, yielding a hot and dry weekend with temps climbing into the low triple digits over the interior. A Heat Advisory may eventually be warranted for parts of Mendocino and Trinity Counties as these temperatures could pose a moderate heat risk for sensitive groups. In addition, the Milepost 97 fire in southwest OR has sent some smoke into parts of Del Norte County this afternoon. Will have to continue to monitor the potential for this smoke to advect farther southward into the area in the coming days. Otherwise, temperatures will trend back down closer to climatological norms next week as high pressure is replaced by large scale troughing across the eastern Pacific. /CB && .AVIATION...Visible satellite imagery reveals a much more extensive stratus deck than yesterday along the North Coast. Marine layer depth has increased to around 1500 feet, leading to a more persistent IFR/LIFR threat at coastal terminals today. A mesoscale circulation which developed offshore of Cape Mendocino has helped to pull some of the coastal stratus away from the Humboldt Bay region, yielding a period of VFR conditions at ACV. This has the potential to be short lived as onshore flow later this afternoon pushes stratus back towards the coast. Meanwhile, CEC looks like it remain predominantly IFR or lower through the remainder of the day, perhaps with a brief window of VFR early this evening. Saturday is looking a little more promising for some breaks of sunshine in the afternoon as high pressure builds over the region. Meanwhile, UKI should remain VFR through the TAF period. However, will have to monitor smoke from the wildfire in southern OR as this could have an impact on interior airfields in the next few days. /CB && .MARINE...The combination of high pressure over the E Pacific and an inland thermal trough will maintain N winds across the coastal waters. Winds will drop off a bit today, but advisory level seas and marginal winds will continue over the outer waters. Winds will increase again late tonight and on Saturday. Advisory level conditions will also be possible closer to the coast from time to time.
