.SYNOPSIS...Another afternoon of hot temperatures is expected
today across northwest California, followed by cooler conditions
during the second half of the week. Otherwise, isolated
thunderstorms will be possible across the interior mountains this
afternoon and evening.

.DISCUSSION...Morning satellite imagery shows an area of cooling
cloud tops moving northeast across the Bay Area. That cloudiness
is forecast to pivot northward toward Mendocino County later this
morning, and then spread farther north across the remainder of the
CWA through the afternoon. In addition, model guidance continues
to show the combination of steep lapse rates and midlevel
moistening will aid in the generation of low to moderate MUCAPE
values. Thus, an isolated shower or thunderstorm can't be ruled
out anywhere across NWRN CA, including coastal locations of
Humboldt County. However, the greatest threat for thunderstorms
will materialize this afternoon and evening over the interior
mountains as an upper trough moves east across the region.
Otherwise, warm temperatures have held steady through the night,
with values ranging from the mid 50s to 60s along the coast, to
60s and 70s across the higher ridges. These warm morning lows will
give way to another hot afternoon across NWRN CA...though not
quite as warm as Tuesday per slightly cooler 850 mb temperatures
occurring in response to an approaching upper trough.
Nevertheless, highs from 90 to 100 will be common across interior
valleys, and widespread 70s will prevail along the coast.
After today, model guidance shows strengthening northerly
boundary layer flow becoming established, which will usher marine
stratus across coastal locations, and aid in highs cooling roughly
10-15 degrees compared to Tuesday/Wednesday.

.AVIATION...Widespread VFR conditions will continue for at least
another 12 hours for almost all of northwest California. Some mid
and high clouds associated with an upper system may move across
the region today along with the slight chance of some light
showers and thunderstorms. Marine influence returns to the coast
with low clouds and fog likely this afternoon at KCEC and to KACV
more toward the evening. Winds will remain very light, tending
offshore during the overnight hours, and perhaps slightly more
onshore but still under 10 kt.

.MARINE...The pleasant marine weather window will continue today
before high pressure offshore begins to strengthen and build back
toward the coast. This will result in increasing northerly winds
on Thursday, first more locally off Pt St George and downwind of
Cape Mendocino late Thursday. These winds will expand across all
of our coastal waters heading into the weekend, with gale force
gusts possible across portions of the outer waters. Have issued a
Gale Watch to reflect these potential gusts. Steep northerly seas
will build in response to these winds, possibly reaching 10 ft
over the outer waters on Friday, and even a bit higher over the
weekend.

.FIRE WEATHER...Elevated and/or high based thunderstorms will be
possible this afternoon and evening across portions of interior
Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, as well as Trinity County and
northern Mendocino County. A warm dry sub-cloud layer will result
in very little precipitation occurring with any thunderstorm that
forms. However, current fuel guidance continues to indicate that
vegetation is too moist to support a fire weather watch and/or red
flag warning.
