.SYNOPSIS...Periods of light rain will occur across the region
through Thursday. Heavy rain and gusty south winds are expected on
Friday. Additional rainfall will be likely during the weekend
into early next week.

.DISCUSSION...Upper ridging is occurring over the west coast early
Wednesday morning. Despite the increase in subsidence aloft, deep
boundary layer moisture (up to around 5000 feet MSL) is aiding in
the generation of very light precipitation over portions of NWRN
CA. Rain is forecast to increase in intensity during Thursday in
response to the passage of an upper-level shortwave trough. Model
guidance shows that wave exiting east during Thursday night.
However, a strong frontal system is expected to quickly approach
from the west Friday morning. South winds from 40-60 mph will be
possible ahead of that system across exposed ridges and coastal
areas in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. In addition, strong
upward vertical motion occurring along/ahead of the front will
favor a period of moderate to locally heavy rain.
The front is forecast to depart the area during Friday afternoon,
but light to moderate showers will persist into part of Friday
evening. Thereafter, a progressive westerly upper-level flow
regime is forecast to occur during the weekend into early next
week. In addition, multi-model guidance shows an atmospheric river
impacting Oregon/Washington during Sunday, with some guidance
suggesting the AR may drift southward toward NWRN CA during the
second half of the weekend into Monday. If that scenario comes to
fruition, then heavy rain and hydrologic impacts would be
possible.

toward the coast late Thursday. By late Thursday a stronger front
approaches and moves rapidly across the waters early Friday
morning. Gale conditions are likely for mainly the northern outer
waters, followed by rapidly diminishing southerly winds later on
Friday. Steep fresh waves will reach over 10 ft in some areas on
Friday into Friday night, then gradually lower this weekend.
Meanwhile, another substantial westerly swell will build in on
Saturday and last into Sunday. However, latest model guidance has
this swell much lower than previous guidance, more on the order of
10 to 12 ft at 16 seconds, resulting in combined seas around 12
to 14 ft this weekend.
