AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 523 AM PDT Mon Mar 25 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A cold front will push across northwest California this morning, with rain tapering to showers this afternoon. Tuesday will be in between storm systems, with another front tracking through on Wednesday, followed by continued showery weather on Thursday. && .DISCUSSION...A low-level jet in advance of an approaching cold front is bringing gusty winds to portions of northwest California this morning, particularly across the higher terrain. A Wind Advisory for portions of the Humboldt interior above 1500 ft has expired, but winds will continue to gust over 40 mph until the cold front moves through around mid-morning. Lower elevations and coastal areas will occasionally see gusty winds as well, but mainly in the 25 to 35 mph range. Rainfall through this evening will range from three quarters of an inch to locally an inch and a half, but the bulk of this will fall by midday. Showers will continue in the wake of the front this afternoon, especially north of Cape Mendocino. Enough instability may exist with the cold air aloft under an upper-level trough for isolated thunderstorms close to the Del Norte Coast late this afternoon and this evening. Otherwise, drier air will result in diminishing showers heading into tonight, with a break between storm systems on track for Tuesday. A few showers may linger across the interior, but expect a largely dry day for most of northwest California, with even some breaks of sun. The next storm system will approach Tuesday night, with a cold front pushing across our region around Wednesday morning. Expect similar rainfall amounts with this system as we see from today's front. Showers will persist Wednesday and Thursday as upper-level low pressure drifts east across the Pacific Northwest while filling. Despite the active weather, impacts will be minimal, with largely beneficial rainfall. Rivers see substantial rises, but will remain well below monitor and flood state. High pressure may finally build in Friday and Saturday. /AAD && .AVIATION...Strong southerly winds and low level shear will impact CEC and ACV through about 14z this morning as a front moves inland along the Redwood Coast. LLWS will hang on for a bit longer this morning at UKI before the front moves through Mendocino County. Moderate rain will also accompany the front, yielding intermittent MVFR conditions at all terminals through the afternoon. Conditions will improve to VFR after 00z as rain tapers off to showers. /CB && .MARINE...Moderate to strong southerly breezes and steep short period seas will quickly diminish later this morning as the approaching front moves ashore and weakens. This will allow Small Craft Advisory conditions to come to an end with lighter south winds prevailing tonight into Tuesday. A decaying mid period westerly swell on the order of 8 feet at 13 seconds will be the primary wave group impacting the waters through Tuesday once the short period seas subside this morning. More hazardous conditions will return Tuesday night into Wednesday with the arrival of the next front, bringing another round of strong southerly breezes and steep short period seas which will likely necessitate another set of Small Craft Advisories.
