.SYNOPSIS...Some widely scattered rain showers and mountain snow
showers will linger early tonight. Monday is expected to be
mainly dry although some occasional light rain is possible in the
afternoon. Monday night through Wednesday a large storm system
offshore will bring more wet weather, with periods of moderate to
heavy rain and gusty winds. Thursday is looking dry at this point.

.UPDATE...Have cancelled the Winter Storm Warning early for the
interior elevations above 3000 or 3500 feet, as steadier snow
ended more abruptly than expected across the warning area. Much of
the area also saw snow levels rise closer to 3500 or 4000 feet,
with precipitation changing to rain. The exception is
eastern/northeastern Trinity county where colder air has remained
more stubborn. A few snow showers will be possible tonight,
mainly this evening, but any additional accumulations will be
minor. Either way, snow levels will rise substantially on Monday,
with only light spotty precipitation possible. /AAD

.Short Term...A frontal boundary is bringing periods of rain and
snow to the area today. Snow levels have been a bit slower to come
up this morning than expected, especially in eastern Trinity
county where snow is falling down 1700 feet in the eastern
Valleys. Not much accumulation is expected at this elevation, but
up to 3 inches is possible as low 2,500 feet. Farther west in
Humboldt and Del Norte counties snow levels were low this morning,
but have started to rise. Winds have been breezy on the ridges
with gusts to of 35 to 40 mph. They will be the strongest in
Mendocino county this evening as the area of low pressures in just
south of the area.
Tonight rain and snow is expected to end fairly quickly as the
system moves out of the area. Skies may partially clear
initially, but this is expected to be short lived. Monday a warm
front moving into the area will bring widespread clouds. The
models are struggling on the rainfall amounts and wind speeds
with this warm front. The NAM brings some occasional light rain
into Trinity and Mendocino county in the afternoon. There could be
a short period of low snow levels initially, but they should rise
fairly quick with the warm air advection. Due to the increasing
winds the Humboldt Bay area is expected to stay mainly dry Monday.
Monday night into Tuesday morning winds will continue to increase
as an area of strong low pressure slowly moves by the area to the
west. This will increase southerly winds again with gusts of 45
to 55 mph possible on the ridges. The lower elevations are
expected to see much lighter winds due to an inversion at a
couple thousand above sea level. These winds, combined with a
deep layer of moisture could bring significant precip to the areas
of higher terrain. This is a fairly weakly forced environment
and that means the precip amounts will be highly driven by the
terrain. Areas on the leeward side will likely see much lighter
rain and areas on the windward side will see much more persistent
and heavier precip. The Integrated vapor transport is fairly high
through this 18 to 24 hour period. The models may be under-doing
the precip amounts in the higher terrain, this will need to be
watched as it gets closer. Most areas will see snow levels above
6,000 feet.
Tuesday afternoon and evening the main front will finally move
through. This will bring more widespread moderate to heavy rain
across the area. Currently it doesn't look like this will cause
any flooding the mainstem rivers, however this will largely
depend on how much rain fell in the previous 18 hours. Snow
levels are expected to fall behind the front, but only to around
4,000 to 5,000 feet. Wednesday the upper level moving overhead
will bring slightly cooler temperatures aloft and some showers to
the area. The GFS is more robust with these showers than the NAM
at this point. At this point it doesn't look like there will be
enough instability for thunderstorms, but this will need to be
watched as it gets closer. MKK
.Long Term...Thursday it looks like there will be a break in the
rain. There may be some breaks in the clouds, but confidence is
low on the coverage. Another systems is expected to move to move
into the area on Friday and bring a quick shot of rain and wind.
Models are now showing an additional system moving through on
Sunday. Confidence is low on the details of these systems, but it
looks like the wet and windy pattern is expected to continue. MKK
.AVIATION...Widespread rains will shift E through the day with
most precipitation coming to an end by late afternoon along the
Redwood Coast and by evening at KUKI. Ceilings will be mostly VFR
as long as the downslope SE-S winds continue, but ceilings will
likely drop to MVFR as winds diminish this afternoon. Mid and high
cloudiness will begin to increase later tonight ahead of the next
in the series of storm systems, but there may be enough of a
break in the clouds, coupled with lighter winds and abundant
ground moisture, for some patchy fog to develop. /SEC
.MARINE...Winds and seas continue to subside this afternoon, and
have allowed the Small Craft Advisory and Hazardous Seas Warning
to expire. This lull will be fairly short-lived, as S winds will
begin to ramp up by Monday afternoon ahead of a deep low pressure
system. This system is expected to move toward the Pacific NW
coast before turning more N-NE. However, the strength and size of
the surface low will lead to a tightening of the pressure gradient
over the local area and sustained gales with gusts of 45 knots by
Tuesday. A Gale Watch continues for all of the coastal waters
save the N inner waters. This will likely be upgraded to a warning
by late tonight.
A WNW swell will continue to subside through Tuesday. A building WSW
swell, the result of the fetch associated with the next strong low,
will impact the area by Tuesday afternoon, coinciding with building
short period locally generated waves. This will lead to combined
seas of 20 to 24 feet by Tuesday night. /SEC
