.SYNOPSIS...Periods of light rain Will continue through this
evening, followed by mostly dry conditions tomorrow. Additional
rounds of rain can be expected Friday and again Monday through
potentially the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...An area of low pressure off the coast is continuing
to bring rain to the area this afternoon. Showers are generally
fairly light so far. Later this afternoon and evening another
shortwave moves through. This could bring some heavier to the
area. Snow levels remain over 5,000 feet this afternoon, but will
start to drop this evening to around 4,000 feet. The ensembles
show the potential for some light showers continuing late tonight
Thursday a transient area of upper level high pressure quickly
moves through the area. This should keep the things fairly dry,
but there is a chance for some showers mainly in the interior
Thursday afternoon. The combination of a fairly warm airmass and
all the moisture around make it unlikely that we will see frost
Thursday morning.
Thursday night mid and high clouds ahead of a cold front start to
move across NW California. Rain is expected to start Friday
morning as the front moves onshore. This should bring a fairly
quick shot of rain as the front moves inland by late in afternoon.
Gusty winds are expected as this front moves through the area, the
GFS and NAM are showing winds of 40 to 50 kt at 925 mb over the
waters. This should translate to gusts of 40 mph over the coastal
ridges. Higher gusts are possible, but this will need to be
watched as it gets closer. Friday night showers are expected as
the upper level trough moves overhead. A fairly cold airmass is
expected early Saturday morning and there is the potential for
some small hail with these showers. Confidence is low on how long
these showers will continue on Saturday. Some of the operational
models quickly dry things out, but the ensembles generally keep
pops fairly high in the morning.
Saturday afternoon the showers will taper off and another brief
period of high pressure is expected to build into the area. For
now it looks like there will be the potential for fairly
widespread frost over the area. This will depend on how much fog
and low clouds form, but quite a few inland areas could see frost.
Sunday night into Monday the system starts to move into the area.
Confidence still low on the exact timing of when this system will
move onshore, but high that will see a decent shot of rain on
Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday the pattern is expected to remain
wet. At this point the rain doesn't look like it will have large
impacts. MKK

.AVIATION...Showery rain continues to move northward over
Northwestern California this afternoon as a system tracks from Pt
Arena toward the Oregon Coast. Conditions may occasionally drop to
IFR within heavier showers, however these should be relatively short-
lived and dissipate by early this evening. Relatively weak low-level
wind shear is also possible ahead of approaching bands of heavier
showers. After the showers finish, depending on the density of high
clouds tonight, we may see inland valley fog develop while easterly
winds at the coast should suppress fog development at KACV and KCEC.

.MARINE...Westerly winds in the outer waters should shift to
southerly as a surface low pressure center tracks northward up the
coast. Along with this direction shift, winds across all waters
should weaken to below 15 kts by this evening. Southerlies are
expected to accelerate again tomorrow night with gusts to near gale
force, strongest offshore of Pt. St. George. After these southerlies
subside winds are expected to stay relatively light through the
early part of the weekend.
The WNW swell currently dominating the coastal waters will continue
to weaken through this afternoon and into tomorrow. Strong
southerlies on Friday morning will generate short period southerly
seas to 10 ft across the northern outer waters on Friday before
subsiding into the weekend. Simultaneously, another solid WNW swell
will fill in on Friday and peak Saturday morning at around 14 ft at
16 seconds.
