.SYNOPSIS...Widespread rain showers and mountain snow will
continue into the weekend as a series of systems move through the
region. Showers may contain small hail. A few thunderstorms will
also be possible through late tonight. Snow levels will hover
around 2500 feet through Saturday and possibly lower a bit more on
Sunday. High pressure will briefly settle in early next week
before wet weather returns.

.DISCUSSION...A shortwave is moving across the region this
afternoon which has allowed a line of stronger showers and
isolated thunderstorms to develop off the coast. These cells have
been producing gusty winds and small hail and will impact coastal
locations through this evening. Snow levels have increased this
afternoon ahead of the system however elevations above 3,000 feet
will continue to see snow showers. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue through early Saturday morning and
snow levels will descend once again to around 2,000-2,500 feet.
Yet another quick moving shortwave will cross the area Saturday
morning into the afternoon which may help to invigorate showers
yet again. With the colder air mass the stronger showers will once
again be capable of producing small hail Saturday and Sunday.
Heavier showers will also be able to lower snow levels below
roughly 2,500 feet however major accumulations are not expected
Saturday.
Late Saturday night the last shortwave of the series will move
towards the area with snow levels potentially as low as 1,000
feet with a rain/snow mix even lower than that. Therefore, late
Saturday night into early Sunday morning it would not be
surprising to see a few locations below 2,000 feet have light snow
accumulations and a winter weather advisory may be needed. The
main limiting factor will be the lack of moisture and spotty
nature of the snow showers. Weak high pressure will build in late
Sunday leading to clear but cold weather through Tuesday night
before another round of wet weather returns. /WCI

.AVIATION...Numerous showers...some heavy downpours with small hail, gusty
winds...mainly near the coast, and MVFR Cigs and Vis...occasional
IFR conditions continued to impact area airports/airfields through
afternoon. There were a few reports of Thunderstorms in the early
hours...mainly near the Mendocino Coast. The Mendocino Coast has
also been experiencing considerable heavy downpours and hail showers
almost constantly today. Overall conditions expected to ramp up
through the remainder of the afternoon and evening as a trough
approaches the region. Winds will shift toward the west-southwest to
west as the trough passes late evening/early morning then will tend
toward the west and northwest into Saturday. /TA

.MARINE...A large swell is currently moving through the waters.
The large swell is around 15 to 18 feet and continuing to build
into the waters this afternoon. Breezy south to southwest
winds continue this afternoon. This will continue to generate a
short period southerly wave of around 10 feet at 10 seconds.
Locally stronger winds are expected in the heavier showers with
a few gusts to 40KT possible. Thunderstorms are also possible
with these stronger showers this evening.
Tonight winds will remain around 20 to 25kt but will gradually
switch to the northwest. Saturday winds will generally be out of
the northwest, but may briefly switch to the south again in the
northern inner waters Saturday afternoon. The steep short period
waves will slowly diminish tonight and Saturday.
Saturday night into Sunday high pressure builds into the area and
widespread northerly winds are expected to return to the area.
This will bring elevated short period waves. At this point gales
are not expected, but it could be close, especially in the
southern waters. The northern inner waters will likely see these
drop off each night and morning and increase again in the
afternoon. High pressure is expected to continue through much of
the week bringing these northerly winds.
Sunday afternoon the forerunners of another swell are expected to
move into the waters. Initially they will be around 21 seconds,
but will build to around 6 feet at 17 seconds on Monday. From
there it will gradually diminish through the week. MKK

.BEACH HAZARDS...A W-NW swell at 20-23 ft will bring high surf,
with breakers from 22-26 feet on west-northwest facing beaches
into Saturday morning. A High Surf Advisory continues. The threat
for hazardous surf will gradually subside Saturday afternoon. Astronomical
tides will continue to rise this weekend into early next week
which may allow minor coastal flooding to occur around Humboldt
Bay.
