.SYNOPSIS...Northwest California will see another dry day today
with at least partial sunshine for most areas. Clouds will
increase tonight ahead of a cold front, which will bring a quick
shot of rain and some high elevation snow on Sunday. High
pressure will return Monday and Tuesday with dry but seasonably
cool weather.

.DISCUSSION...It is another chilly late December morning across
northwest California, with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s
to lower 40s. However, these readings are several degrees milder
than last night for most spots, thanks to low clouds and fog in
the river valleys once again, along with some broken high clouds.
While the low clouds across the deeper interior valleys will
likely persist into the midday hours, under a high pressure ridge
and inversion, most of our area will see at least partial sunshine
today. Increasing high clouds will tend to dim the sun this
afternoon, especially toward coastal areas. Expect high
temperatures to be 5 to 10 degrees milder across much of the
interior today, but otherwise only a couple degrees higher along
the coast compared to Friday.
Clouds will continue to increase and thicken tonight as a cold
front and upper-level trough approach from the northwest. Model
guidance has trended a bit slower with the arrival of rain, now
holding off until Sunday morning along the coast. An initial shot
of rain Sunday morning and midday will be followed by additional
afternoon showers. Precipitation tapers off as the storm tracks to
our south on Sunday night. Rainfall amounts will range from a
quarter to a half-inch for most of northwest California; lowest
across the valleys of Mendocino and eastern Trinity. Higher
amounts locally up to an inch will be possible in the mountains of
Del Norte. Meanwhile, snow levels will rise above 6000 feet ahead
of the cold front. The exception will be around eastern Trinity
county, where colder and drier air could keep snow levels 4000 to
5000 feet. Snow levels will fall toward 4000 feet across the rest
of the area Sunday night, but by then the precipitation will be
ending. This all means that most mountain passes will be just
wet on Sunday, with the exception being Scott Mountain Summit,
where 2 or 3 inches might accumulate. With snow removal not
usually occurring on the weekends, this could cause some impacts
to travel there on Highway 3, and later shifts may consider a
Winter Weather Advisory. Additionally, we will have to keep an eye
on the coastal waters as the upper-level low passes by Sunday
afternoon and evening. At this point instability looks marginal,
but we will have to consider adding isolated thunderstorms to the
forecast there. These will probably stay off the Humboldt and
Mendocino coast, if they do develop, but it will be something to
keep an eye on.
Monday and Tuesday are still looking dry as high pressure returns.
There will likely be some sunshine outside of interior valley
morning low clouds and fog. Models continue to threaten the
Pacific Northwest next week with a series of storm systems in
moist westerly flow, but it is questionable how far south
significant rain from these systems will reach. Areas near the
Oregon border will have the best chances, and timing-wise,
Wednesday and Friday look like the days that have a higher
potential for wet weather at this point. Aside from some chilly
morning lows early in the week, temperatures look mild with highs
in the 50s to low 60s for most of our populated areas. Snow levels
will remain high until at least Friday. /AAD

.AVIATION...Some valley fog and low clouds have resulted in local
LIFR conditions across the interior, while the main terminals and
all coastal areas are VFR. High clouds elsewhere have precluded
much in the way of shallow fog formation this morning. Aside from
the valley fog which will last until midday, VFR conditions will
prevail through tonight. Clouds will begin to increase later today
and tonight, but ceilings should not drop to 5000 feet at CEC and
ACV until near or after 12Z on Sunday. A cold front and upper-
level low passing by will bring a quick shot of rain Sunday
morning followed by showers lasting until the evening. Winds will
remain very light today. Expect some increase in southerly and
southwesterly winds on Sunday, but nothing too strong. /AAD

.MARINE...Small Craft Advisories continue this morning as a
northwesterly swell continues at around 10 to 12 feet at 15
seconds. This swell will lower today below 10 feet at some point
today, though the advisories may need to be extended 3 to 6
hours if the swell lingers a bit higher/later than forecast.
Otherwise, northerly winds will be lighter today, though still
around 15 kt over much of the waters south of Cape Mendocino.
On Sunday, seas will remain relatively low, combined around 8
feet. A cold front will bring rain Sunday morning followed by
showers, some of which could be briefly heavy. Winds will become
southerly later tonight ahead of the front, then switch to
westerly at 10 to 15 kt on Sunday.
Stronger northerly winds will arrive on Monday as strong high
pressure builds back across the eastern Pacific. Would not rule
out some gusts to gale force across the outer waters.
Additionally, wave models are pointing toward a northwest swell
of 13 to 15 feet at 16 seconds arriving on Monday. With the
steeper short-period waves, this will result in confused and
chaotic seas. Conditions should improve somewhat on Tuesday for
the start of commercial crab season as northerly winds ease up a
little and the swell starts to decay, but will likely still
warrant Small Craft Advisories. Yet another swell is expected to
arrive on Wednesday. A couple of storm systems passing by may
bring rain for mid and late week, but at this point winds look
