AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 256 PM PST Sun Dec 8 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Dry and mild weather is expected tonight and Monday, with some patchy valley fog lingering through Monday morning. A weak front will bring light rain back to the area on Tuesday, with mild but showery weather continuing through much of the remainder of the week. && .DISCUSSION...Precipitation has mostly come to an end across northwest California this afternoon as the upper level trough departs to the southeast, with just a few weak showers lingering over the higher terrain of Trinity and eastern Mendocino Counties. A highly amplified ridge building over the west coast tonight will support mainly dry and mild conditions through Monday. More extensive cloud cover may linger along the coast tonight, but partial clearing over the interior coupled with abundant low level moisture from the recent rainfall will likely support widespread fog development over the interior valleys through Monday morning. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies will prevail across much of the area during the day on Monday. This period of dry weather will be relatively short lived as the ridge is bisected by another shortwave approaching the BC/WA coast early in the week, which will allow a weak upper disturbance and corresponding front to move across northern CA on Tuesday. Rainfall amounts with this next system look to be limited to a few tenths of an inch between Tuesday afternoon and early Wednesday morning, with no strong winds expected. A zonal flow pattern will then become established over the area for the latter half of the week, with a series of embedded waves providing occasional chances for rain into next weekend. This could amount to an additional few inches of rain across the northern extent of the area between Wednesday night and Saturday, with lower amounts farther south. That said, no major weather impacts are expected across the area over the next seven days. /CB && .AVIATION...Low clouds continue to afflict northwest California airfields with MVFR ceilings expected to filter in and out through the remainder of the day. Conditions will deteriorate tonight along coastal areas and interior valleys as fog settles in and causes ceiling and visibility restrictions. Winds will remain generally lighter and northerly through the TAF period. However, eddies in the low-level flow will result in periods of southerly winds, especially for KCEC. Come Monday, expect VFR conditions with high ceilings possible. KMZ && .MARINE...Building high pressure will cause lower winds and seas to to continue in northwest California waters through at least Monday. Then an approaching frontal boundary will bring moderate southerly winds for Tuesday. Small craft advisories will be likely with wind gusts approaching 25 kt offshore and steep seas reaching 8 to 12 feet. The weather pattern will remain unsettled through the rest of the week with additional weather systems bringing the potential for rain. This means moderate southerly winds will continue through the rest of the work week before increasing north winds return over the weekend. The sea state over the next few days will be comprised of various mid-period swells from the southwest to northwest as well as wind-driven waves with the frontal passage on Tuesday. In addition, there is a significant WNW swell forecast to impact northwest California on Thursday and Friday. The sea state will build rapidly on Thursday and peak Friday morning around 16 feet at 18 seconds. A hazardous seas warning may be necessary if the forecast remains on track.
