.SYNOPSIS...An active weather pattern will continue through the
weekend. A warm front will generate spotty rain and gusty winds
tonight through Thursday, primarily for Del Norte and northern
Humboldt counties. Gusty winds are expected on Friday before
widespread rain arrives on Saturday. Showers and lower snow levels
are expected by Sunday behind the front.

.DISCUSSION...Next weather feature will shift attention toward
a moderate rain event for Del Norte and far northern Humboldt
counties late tonight into Thursday. 1 to 3 inches of rain are
likely tonight through Thursday night for Del Norte county.
Amounts will not be as much for areas south. No flooding is
expected at this time...other than some localized urban ponding
of water. Southerly winds will also start to ramp up with the
warm front on Thursday, however current indications are for winds
to remain below advisory level. This will need to be monitored. It
does not take much to get wind gusts to 50 mph over our exposed
ridges. A break in the moist westerly flow will occur on Friday as
a wave develops offshore on the front and the flow aloft
amplifies. The main concern on Friday will be gusty southerly
winds. It is not looking like anything too major at this point,
with advisory level gusts from 50 to 60 mph over the ridges and
perhaps over the coastal headlands. Rain with the cold front is
expected to arrive on Saturday. Heavy rain will be possible
throughout the forecast area. The GFS was slightly faster,
suggesting an earlier arrival of rain Friday night. The ECMWF was
slower. For now leaned toward the ensemble blend. The ECMWF also
keeps the movement of the front more stationary while the GFS
moves it through which seems to be a more realistic solution.
Cooler air aloft and instability will follow behind the front on
Sunday. Showers and lower snow levels are expected...however
precip amounts look minimal. Cool and unsettled weather may
continue on Monday and Tuesday of next week. The models have been
trending drier on both days before another shortwave trough
arrives around mid next week. It should not be too earth-
shattering that we will get more rain next week. That is normal
for the latter part of December.

.AVIATION...A low pressure system pushed across the Southern Mendocino Coast by
early afternoon continuing to bring steady rain to South Mendocino.
Ukiah's airport reported low clouds with Cigs/Vis lowering to MVFR
by early-mid morning. Rain has been somewhat lackadaisical across
the northern areas...including Del Norte, Humboldt and Trinity
Counties. The limited amount of rain was partly due to downsloping
flow that caused adiabatic drying earlier this morning. Visibilities
continued unrestricted in the Northern areas through afternoon.
Winds also picked up across the region by late morning. Model data
through Thursday afternoon indicating areas of IFR conditions
developing at the main air terminals in the morning. /TA

.MARINE...SE winds peaked this morning as surface low pressure
moved onshore near the Mendocino/Sonoma county border and slowly
filled. A brief uptick in S winds is expected over the N waters
tonight, then a more significant increase in southerlies will occur
on Thursday and Thursday night. Gales are likely over at least the
outer waters N of Cape Mendocino by early Friday, and a Gale Watch
continues for that area. The Small Craft Advisory for the N inner
marine zone and the S outer marine zone has been extended through
early Saturday morning. NW swell will persist through Thursday with
another NW swell train arriving by Friday, keeping seas elevated
