.SYNOPSIS...Clouds will increase tonight into Tuesday morning
along the coast, while dry, sunny and warm conditions continue
inland. A dry cold front will move across the area on Tuesday
bringing cooling, breezy northerly winds through mid week, with
heightened fire danger for portions of our area.
&&
.DISCUSSION...After another cool start to the day, it's turning
out to be another warm and sunny one with inland temperatures even
tending several degrees warmer compared to yesterday afternoon.
Northwest winds are slightly higher in exposed areas as well, but
still it might be a stretch to even call it 'breezy' at most
locations. Conditions at the beaches are a bit cooler as winds
have tended more onshore, as the thermal trough oriented near the
coast on Sunday has weakened. Onshore flow will increase tonight
as a dry cold front approaches from the north. This front will not
bring any rain, and may not even carry much cloud cover. The main
sensible weather impacts will be much cooler temperatures,
stronger northerly winds, and exceptionally dry air, which will
result in heightened fire danger for portions of our area late
Wednesday into Thursday morning (see fire weather discussion
below). After the hotter inland valleys approach 90 today, 60s
and 70s will be the rule for high temperatures on Wednesday and
Thursday. Coastal areas will not see much change in the high
temperatures, but it will feel noticeably cooler with the gusty
northerly winds.
Breezy conditions will begin for all areas on Tuesday afternoon,
with winds generally in the 10 to 20 mph range with higher gusts.
Locally stronger winds will be found over the higher
elevations exposed to the north, and along portions of the coast.
Conditions will remain breezy in some areas Tuesday night, but
most valleys will decouple and calm down. This will allow for some
chilly temperatures, with frost and even some freezing
temperatures by Wednesday morning in the interior valleys.
Wednesday will be breezy as well, with winds gusting locally 30 to
40 mph along some of the coastal mountains and headlands, as well
as over some of the higher interior mountains. Winds outside of
the interior mountains will begin to relax Wednesday night into
Thursday. The low level flow will try to go offshore as a thermal
trough drifts off the coast for Thursday and Friday, which will
result in lighter winds and warming temperatures, even at the
coast. Thursday will start off chilly though, with the potential
for frosty conditions in the early morning, even closer to the
coast. We continue to keep an eye on a front trying to approach
for the weekend, but any rain that does manage to make it in will

.AVIATION...Mostly clear skies were seen through much of the day
across the area, although there are indications that clouds will be
increasing over the coastal waters later this evening. In addition,
the marine layer is forecast to deepen to 1000-1500 ft by tonight.
Some low cloudiness and/or fog along the Redwood Coast may develop
later tonight, but local offshore wind development may just as well
inhibit their growth. Thus confidence is low at this time. VFR
conditions are expected to continue at KUKI. Winds are expected to

.MARINE...Northerly winds will continue to gradually increase across
the outer waters today and tonight with the strongest winds over the
S outer waters. There may be a brief period of sub-advisory winds
and seas across the N outer waters early tomorrow, but felt the
duration will not be long enough to warrant a gap in the existing
Small Craft Advisory. Winds will further increase Tuesday afternoon
and evening, with gales developing over the S outer waters and
eventually the N outer waters as well. The Gale Watch for the S
outer waters continues, beginning Tuesday evening. Have hoisted a
Gale watch in the N outers as well, beginning early Wednesday
morning to cover the strong winds spreading northward. Small Craft
Advisories for the inner waters stand unchanged from this morning,
starting Tuesday afternoon. Short period seas are expected to ramp
up to nearly 15 ft in portions of the outer waters on Wednesday.
Winds are forecast to max out Wednesday evening, with speeds rapidly

.FIRE WEATHER...Fire Weather Watches continue for elevations above
1500 feet in fire weather zones 276 and 277 for Wednesday
afternoon through Thursday morning. A dry cold front passing by on
Tuesday will bring gusty winds in its wake with very low relative
humidity. Recoveries will be especially poor outside of the coast
and valleys Wednesday night into Thursday morning; possibly only
creeping up to the 20 to 30 percent range across the higher
elevations in the watch area. Additionally, rainfall has been
minimal for the last month or two there, so that fuels are still
receptive to wildfire starts and spread. Taking a close look at
the wind speeds from the latest guidance today...we are expecting
gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph across the exposed ridgetops,
primarily above 2500 or 3000 feet in northeast Mendocino county
into southern Trinity, and possibly even over to South Fork
Mountain. Some of the coastal ranges outside of the watch area
will see winds at these levels as well, but recent rainfall will
keep the fire danger lower. These types of wind speeds usually are
not enough to cause more than localized tree or powerline damage.
We want to emphasize that across lower elevations and toward the
rest of the coast, winds will be much lighter, and humidity will
be higher. Winds across the entire area will ease later on
Thursday and remain light and generally easterly heading into
