.SYNOPSIS...Warm temperatures can be expected across interior areas
through the weekend, with seasonally mild conditions along the
coast. Generally dry conditions will persist through next week. A
cooling trend will begin this weekend leading to more seasonal
temperatures next week.

.DISCUSSION...High pressure is in place over the region this
afternoon. A weak shortwave approaching the Pacific Northwest
brought fairly widespread stratus to the coast this morning. Some
breaks have developed in the stratus this afternoon, but some
areas remain cloudy, especially south of Cape Mendocino. Tonight
this stratus is expected to expand again, although it may be
limited on the Del Norte coast.
Friday morning this shortwave moves past the area and winds will
increase during the day. This will help stratus clear out more
quickly and winds will increase through the afternoon. Gusts to 25
mph are expected late in the afternoon.
Saturday is expected to see high pressure over the area. Cooler
air aloft will slowly filter. This will keep inland temperatures
slightly cooler and the coastal inversion will be weaker. This
should keep stratus to a minimum, although it is still possible
in the Eel River Valley and possibly around Humboldt Bay. Breezy
north winds will increase slightly along the coast with gusts to
30 mph possible.
Sunday and Monday the pattern is expected to persist, although
winds at the coast will gradually weaken and the potential for
stratus will increase each day.
Monday night into Tuesday a stronger upper level trough is moving
down the north. THe current trajectory keeps it mainly over land
and it will likely be fairly dry. If it moves slightly farther
west this could bring some showers to the interior or even rain
across the area, but currently it is expected to stay dry. This
trough will bring significantly cooler temperatures to the
interior areas as well, near seasonal normals. This cooler airmass
will also weaken the marine inversion and that should help to
reduce stratus along the coast. Wednesday and THursday the area is
expected to remain in fairly cool northwest flow as several
shortwaves bring reinforcing shots of cold air to the region. This
should also limit the coastal stratus. MKK

.AVIATION...Widespread stratus was in place along the coast and
inland river valleys this morning. This afternoon it has clear
back to the coast in some areas, but others remain IFR. These
could clear briefly this evening, but tonight this stratus is
expected to expand again. Confidence is low on exactly how
widespread it will be on the Del Norte coast due to offshore flow
increasing up there. Friday morning this shortwave moves past the
area and winds will increase during the day. This will help
stratus clear out more quickly and winds will increase through the
afternoon. Gusts over 20 KT are expected late in the afternoon
along the coast. Inland areas will generally remain VFR, aside
from some of the river valleys that may see morning stratus. MKK

.MARINE...The combination of high pressure offshore and a
thermal trough over the central valley will continue to produce
gusty northerly winds over the coastal waters for the next several
days. Additionally, a passing upper level disturbance will yield
a slight increase in winds by late Friday, spurring a Gale Watch
across the outer waters through Saturday afternoon. This may need
to be extended into Saturday night. Meanwhile, slightly lower
winds and calmer seas can be expected for the next 24 hours or so
across the nearshore waters, with higher winds and seas mostly
confined to areas immediately downwind of Cape Mendocino. Guidance
does suggest that stronger winds and steeper seas will gradually
expand into the inner waters by Friday and into the weekend,
possibly necessitating some additional headlines for those zones
in later forecast packages. Aside from the steep wind driven seas,
the only other wave group of note is a small mid period swell on
the order of 3 to 5 feet which will continue to propagate through
the coastal waters through early Friday. /CB/MKK
