.SYNOPSIS...Occasional showers and breezy conditions will persist
through Tuesday morning. Late Tuesday afternoon the next system
will start to bring rain, wind and higher elevation snow to the
area through midday wednesday. Additional weather systems will
continue to bring rain and wind to the area through Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...Moist onshore flow continues to bring showers to the
area this afternoon. Snow levels have risen to 3,000 to 3,500 feet
this afternoon. These showers are expected to continue through
Tuesday morning, but accumulations are expected to be light.
Breezy south to southeast winds are ongoing on the coast and over
the higher elevations. These will remain elevated tonight and
diminish Tuesday morning peaking near 50 mph. These will be
strongest along the Del Norte coast where a wind advisory has been
issued for tonight.
Tuesday the next front approaches the area. This is expected to
bring rain, wind and snow to the area. Heavier rain and snow is
expected to start mid to late afternoon. Snow levels will
initially be around 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Along the coast these are
expected to rise fairly quickly to around 4,000 feet in the
evening. Farther inland in the eastern valleys of Trinity county
it gets a little more tricky. Current models are showing colder
air lingering in these valleys. Currently it looks like the snow
levels east of Oregon mountain in Trinity county will be around
2,000 feet for much of the night and into early Wednesday morning.
The heaviest snow accumulations will be mainly above 2,500 feet
so the winter storm watch looks on track for areas above 2,500
feet in Trinity county and above 3,000 feet in northeastern
Mendocino county. Wednesday late in the morning and afternoon
snow levels will rise in Trinity county to around 3,500 to 4,000
feet, however, confidence is low on how quickly these will rise.
Snow amounts could be significantly lower if these rise faster
than expected.
This storm is looking fairly wet as well. Widespread rainfall
amounts of 2 to 4 inches with local amounts of up to 6 inches
possible in the higher terrain. The rivers will need to be
monitored as it gets closer. See hydrology section for more
details.
Tuesday night into Wednesday models are showing a strong area of
low pressure approaching the coast with this system. This has the
potential to bring very strong winds to the near coastal ridges,
but confidence is low on the location and strength. The models are
struggling to handle the rapid cyclogenesis. Currently expecting
gusts of 50 to 60 mph on the coastal ridges, but slight chances in
the strength and position of the low could bring changes to this
forecast.
Thursday the model solutions start to widely diverge. The GFS
quickly moves the system out of the area and Thursday is fairly
dry. The ECMWF is much slower with moving the system out of the
area and keeps significant rainfall over the area through
Thursday. The GFS solution is also much colder. This will need to
be monitored as it gets closer. Towards the weekend another system
is expected to bring more precip to the area. Snow levels will be
lower, but are expected to drop to around 2,000 to 2,500 feet.

Monday high pressure starts to return to the area and drier
conditions are expected. A cold airmass is expected to move over
the area as this dries out and cold overnight temperatures are

.Hydrology...Heavy rain is expected across the area Tuesday night
into Wednesday. Some flooding is possible, especially in Mendocino
county. The Navarro river is forecast to reach flood stage which
may cause Hwy 128 to flood. The Russian River at Hopland is
expected to reach 17 feet which could flood hwy 175. Farther north
the Eel river is expected to reach monitor stage. Small streams
may also see some flooding with the highest potential in Mendocino
county. A flood watch may be needed, but this will be monitored
as it gets closer. MKK

.AVIATION...VFR will continue to prevail at the terminals through
tonight. Some light shower activity is expected and ceilings may
briefly go MVFR. Also, south and southeast winds will remain gusty
at KCEC. Low level wind shear will also be possible late tonight
into early Tuesday morning at both coastal terminals. For the most
part, expect KUKI to remain VFR due to stronger mixing from south
and southeast winds aloft.

.MARINE...Southerly winds have been increasing today across
the northern waters. This gradual increasing trend is expected to
continue through Tuesday as a slow moving cold front approaches.
Winds are expected to reach near GALE across the northern waters
tonight and Tuesday morning/early afternoon in the southern outer
waters. Overnight Tuesday through Wednesday, an intensifying low
pressure system will push through the waters, likely resulting in a
surge of stronger winds, perhaps reaching sustained speeds of 35 to
40 kt and isolated gusts around 50 kt near Cape Mendo. Confidence is
not high at this time regarding the exact timing and magnitude of
these stronger winds due to differences between the models and run
to run inconsistencies.
Seas will gradually settle down late Wednesday through Thursday, but
another storm will arrive with a large northwesterly swell and fresh
westerly winds late in the week.

.BEACH HAZARDS...A W-NW swell around 20 ft will bring a threat for
high surf, with breakers from 22-26 ft Friday through Saturday.
