Primary focus is on developing winter storm which is still on
schedule to produce significant snow across the forecast area
Friday night into Saturday. In the short term, slow melting
snowpack and stable conditions continue to help keep persistent
low stratus and stagnant temperatures over eastern Kansas and
much of Missouri. And just as areas of widespread fog has
developed the last several nights, expect a repeat tonight as
areas of fog redevelop into early tomorrow morning. Fog will
disperse by mid morning as southerly winds increase 10-20kt,
however, low ceilings will remain throughout the day.

Forecast track for approaching winter storm is eerily similar as
last week's storm. That said, there are differences in the
forecast. A strong upper level trough over the US West Coast will
dig across the Southern Rockies and emerge over north the Texas.
As the surface low tracks east into Oklahoma and eventually
Arkansas, Gulf moisture combined with isentropic lift will create
widespread light rain over southern Kansas and southern Missouri
and snow over Nebraska and Iowa Friday afternoon. Rain will turn
over snow Friday afternoon into Friday evening as cold Canadian
air pours into the area. Unlike last week winter storm, this
system will move out of the area fairly quickly and the window for
accumulating snow is fairly short. How fast the rain turns over
to snow, will be critical to forecast snow totals. Light snow will
extend into Saturday morning and taper off west to east during
Saturday afternoon/evening as the storm exits the area.
Additionally, tightening pressure gradient will produce 30-35mph
wind gusts Saturday. While snow will be tapering off, snow and
blowing snow will create hazardous driving conditions. By Sunday,
skies will clear and high pressure builds in providing very cold
temperatures. Fortunately, the shot of cold air will only be a
glancing blow as high pressure quickly shifts to our east. Expect
lows to range from near 0 near the Iowa border to teens further
south and highs from the teens to near freezing for the southern
counties.

Confidence is growing as recent model guidance has been consistent
in timing and placement of snow, unfortunately, models continue
to yo-yo snow totals from model vs model and model run vs model
run. Even more concerning are the latest short term CAM model
forecasts which indicate possible higher snow amounts. So while
confidence is high for timing and placement, confidence is still
somewhat uncertain with snow totals as models continue to struggle.

The long range forecast indicates the next storm system to arrive
Tuesday. Temperature profiles indicate another snow event, but
its still too early to nail down specifics at this time. |

MVFR/IFR cigs will prevail through much of the period with the
potential to drop into LIFR at times. Surface high settling over
the area overnight allowing for light and variable winds will
shift east by 12-14Z allowing southeasterly winds to increase
through the morning hours as winter system approaches the region.
Precipitation will increase during the early afternoon with
showers developing then overspreading eastern Kansas and western
Missouri. Initially, precipitation will be rain and will
transition to a possible rain/snow mix then to all snow by 00Z-
03Z.
