.A winter storm system will move across the region today through 
Saturday. Precipitation has begun as a mix of rain, snow, and 
sleet this morning; but will transition to mostly rain in far 
western Missouri for a few hours this afternoon, before 
transitioning to all snow in the mid to late afternoon hours from
east to west, with accumulating snow Friday night into Saturday. 
The change over from a cold rain to a mix of wintery precipitation
types this afternoon will be a bit nebulous and will make driving
a bit slick. The heaviest accumulations are still expected to

...Heavy snow expected across east central Kansas and Missouri 
tonight and Saturday...

.A winter storm system is starting to move across the region, with
rain, sleet and snow all starting the event. A decent band of 
forcing is seen setting up, roughly along I-70, which is 
resulting in higher snowfall rates across western and central 
Missouri this afternoon. The higher snowfall rates are translating
into more accumulating snow as the snow overcomes surface 
temperatures that are around to above freezing. This will make the
late afternoon and evening hours a bit more dangerous for those 
out driving. So, given the quick change over to snow, think the 
upgrade to the warning is warranted for areas of east central
Kansas and west central Missouri.

...Heavy snow expected across east central Kansas and Missouri
tonight and Saturday...

.A winter storm system is moving across the region, precipitation
that began as a wintry mix has changed over to snow. A moderate 
band of snow is falling along and south of the I-70 corridor, 
which is resulting in higher snowfall rates across western and 
central Missouri tonight. The higher snowfall rates are 
translating into more accumulating snow as the snow overcomes 
surface temperatures that are around to above freezing. This will 
travel dangerous for those out driving tonight through Saturday
morning.

.A winter storm system continues to move across the region today.
Snow has been falling and will continue to fall through this 
afternoon and evening; but the majority of accumulating snow 
has fallen. As a result, will start scaling back the winter storm
warning from west to east this afternoon, starting in and around 
Kansas City. However, areas of central, north central, and 
northeast Missouri will pick up enough additional snow today to

exiting the region to the east, but we can expect to see continued
light snowfall through the rest of the afternoon hours, with very

Well advertised winter storm is still on schedule to produce
widespread accumulating snow across the forecast area Friday night
into Saturday. For today, high pressure ridge extends south from
southern Canada through Mississippi Valley providing light and
variable winds this morning which will slowly switch from the
south as high pressure moves east today. Temperatures will
moderate a bit from yesterday with highs ranging from mid 30s over
NE counties to mid 40s over SW counties; however, clouds will
increase throughout the day and into tonight as moisture profiles
increase ahead of approaching winter storm.

A strong upper level trough currently over the US West Coast will
continue to dig across the central/southern Rockies and emerge
over the Texas/Oklahoma panhandles forming a cutoff low in the
mid- levels. By late Thursday evening, an area of low pressure
will develop over north Texas with an inverted surface trough
extending into Oklahoma and southwestern Missouri. As the Winter
Storm progresses east, tapping low and mid level Gulf moisture,
isentropic lift will create widespread light rain across parts of
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and southwestern Missouri.
Light rain, briefly mixed with winter precipitation, will begin
to spread across eastern Kansas and central Missouri. Minimal
diurnal warming should be enough to turn most precipitation into
rain for the remainder of Friday morning and continue into early
Friday afternoon. However, temperature profiles suggest rain will
quickly change over to all snow by late Friday afternoon through
Saturday morning as surface temperatures drop below 32F degrees
Friday night. How quickly, will be instrumental to the snow total
forecast. Snow chances will begin to diminish across eastern
Kansas and Western Missouri during the afternoon Saturday and by
Saturday evening for central Missouri and parts of eastern
Missouri.

While the NAM, GFS, and ECMWF are in fairly good agreement with
placement of upper level features, there are differences in the
mid- levels, strength and placement of surface low/inverted
trough, and most of all, snow totals. Not surprisingly, the NAM
continues to lead the pack, by a wide margin, with moisture fields
and snow totals. The GFS has the lowest snow totals, especially
for eastern Kansas and far western Missouri, with the ECMWF totals
splitting the difference. More importantly, and more concerning,
are the recent trends to increase snow totals further and further
north into Missouri. With this new development, a Winter Weather
Watch has been issued for Randolph, Howard, and Cooper counties
for the potential of 4-6 inches of snow Friday afternoon into
Saturday evening. For the rest of the forecast area, expect 2-5
inches of snow with lowest amounts falling over eastern Kansas and
Western Missouri to include the Kansas City metro area which
should see 2-3 inches totals. As a reminder, all the ingredients
for this winter storm have yet to come together and there will be
adjustments the next 48 hours.

For the long range forecast, expect moderating temperatures and
dry conditions through Wednesday with the next chance for
precipitation by the end of the week.
