will become very strong, with gusts reaching 45 to 60 mph this 
afternoon and evening. Strong winds may cause tree branches to

the KC metro area southward indicates the area and time where more

Issued at 402 AM CDT TUE MAR 12 2019

Message of the day: Rain returns this morning, with 1-2 inches still
expected across the area through Thursday. This will continue
flooding concerns across the area.

Currently, satellite depicts ridging over the central U.S. with a
positively tilted closed over the Baja California peninsula. On
radar, an area of showers is noted, heading toward the forecast
area, with an expected arrival time in our far southwest within the
next hour or two. These showers are tied to the subtle shortwave
trough ejected from the main system and the amplified LLJ, which is
advecting moisture and warm air into the region. The LLJ will remain
amplified today due to our area being sandwiched between the 850mb
high pressure to our southeast and 850mb low pressure to our
southwest. This will also continue the moisture and warm air
advection from the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, the low pressure
system will continue ejecting upper level energy our way today.
As a result, the rain is expected to continue, with a few breaks
possible, especially overnight. Tonight, the low pressure system
will begin strengthening and moving to the northeast. The system
is still scheduled to track northeast from southwest KS to
southeast NE to the Great Lakes. Widespread moderate to heavy
rainfall is then expected across the area Wednesday as the system
passes through. Warm air advection will be at its peak Wednesday
as well, warming temperatures into the 60s despite the clouds and
rain. Additionally, it will allow the atmosphere to become a
little unstable, likely producing some embedded thunderstorms.
However, severe storms are still not expected, due to the
instability being limited. Finally, the pressure gradient will be
rather tight, producing wind gusts up to 40 mph. Our area should
enter the dry slot for the overnight hours Wednesday into Thursday
with one more chance of light rain Thursday, as the cold front
finally pushes through the area. The frontal passage will also
increase winds again, with gusts between 40-45 mph possible for
much of the day.

With the Gulf of Mexico open for business, PWATs will range from
about 1-1.5 inches, which is well above normal. As for rainfall
totals, they have come down a tad, but overall we still expect
between 1-2 inches across the area. This, in addition to upstream
excessive rainfall and snow melt, will increase flooding concerns
across the area, but especially in Atchison county, MO. Therefore,
the flood watch remains in effect for this county. It has also be
expanded temporally through Thursday night, which is when the
rain should finally end.

High pressure moves in Friday, gradually decreasing winds and
keeping highs slightly below normal. Most importantly though, it
will keep us dry for at least the entire weekend, alleviating
some of the flooding.

Next 2 to 3 hours will feature prevailing rain at the terminals
with a passing shot at some thunder. Then comes a lull this
evening with perhaps some off and on showers before the next
chance of prevailing rain comes Wednesday morning into the
afternoon hours. Aside from the low stratus winds will be strong
just off the surface, providing concern for low level wind shear
during the overnight hours.

west central Missouri...as well as extreme eastern Kansas.

 Moderate to heavy rainfall will develop over the area beginning
 today, with off and on chances persisting through Wednesday
 evening. Widespread river flooding is expected due to upstream
 melting snowpack and local rainfall amounts averaging near 1 to 1.5
 inches. Additionally, areal flooding is possible across northwest
 Missouri.
