AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill MO 545 PM CST Sun Feb 3 2019 .Discussion... Issued at 239 PM CST SUN FEB 3 2019 Well above normal temperatures have overspread the forecast area this afternoon. As further mixing has commenced, clouds have gradually eroded from west to east. Where clouds have cleared outside of snowpack areas, readings have warmed into the 60s. Within the snowpack areas of northern Missouri, temperatures have reached the 50s and recently improved the dense fog conditions. With this trend, will likely cancel the advisory before the expiration time of 6pm. For tonight, the approach of an upper wave and upper diffluent flow will lead to increasing ascent within the warm sector. This should bring an increase to cloud cover as stratus redevelops. Models are in relatively good agreement to generate light measurable precipitation late this evening/overnight as drizzle and light rain develops within the warm air advection regime ahead of a cold front. Temperatures will largely remain steady overnight ahead of the cold front. This boundary will quickly move through the area near/shortly after sunrise Monday, shifting the winds out of the northwest, and advecting cooler and drier air into the forecast area. Look for non-diurnal temperatures trends on Monday, as highs occur early in the day. Clouds will also be on the way out behind the front, with mostly sunny skies expected by the afternoon hours - if not earlier. Much colder temperatures will be in place by Monday night with lows in the teens and 20s. By Tuesday, cold air at the surface will be in place as the cold front becomes quasi-stationary near/just south of the forecast area. Warm and moist air just above the surface will move over this surface boundary, generating light precipitation falling through the cold dome. Forecast soundings suggest a wintry mix of sleet and light freezing rain, with light ice accumulations possible. Precipitation chances linger Wednesday into Thursday as the large upper trough responsible for the active weather slowly moves eastward into the Plains. The 32 degree line will be geographically-fluid over the multi-day period and critical to determining whether precipitation will generally fall as rain or freeze on surfaces. While there is still uncertainty to the degree of cold air in place and specific timing of bouts of precipitation, the overall message is there is a multi-day period of wintry weather potential, including some breaks in the weather, with some areas receiving light icing. Subsequent model data and surface observations will better refine areas at greatest risk for any potential impacts.
