What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Quad Cities, IA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Jan 26, 11:54 AM CST, 3 hours 32 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 26, 11:54 AM CST, 3 hours 32 minutes before

...AVIATION UPDATE...

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1028 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Updated pops and adjusted snowfall amounts a bit higher. Hi-res
QPF and high snow ratios now suggest amounts around an inch, with
local 2 inch amounts. Impacts will be slick roads and visibility
down to 1/2 mile for brief periods. Will be handling with Special
Weather Statements.

UPDATE Issued at 915 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Upstream trends and latest hi-res guidance support boosting pops
through this evening. Also increased snowfall amounts slightly for
a light dusting to about an inch across the forecast area.

&&

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 250 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Bitterly cold, yeah, really really cold temperatures are out there
this morning, with locations in our northern half CWA wobbling
between -10 and -20! Our office has been down to -16 several times
in the past hour, but winds are calm. Thus, no headlines for wind
chill are in effect.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
ISSUED AT 250 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

A bitterly cold start to the day is going happen, followed by a very
similar day to yesterday. Temperatures will warm to the single
digits above zero as clouds arrive from an approaching weak clipper.
This system should bring another 2 to 4 hour long snow event to the
area, with up to an inch of snow. Lift, while not strong is very
much in the dendritic layer and with wind very light, we will again
accumulate efficiently. The snow should arrive in the west by mid
morning, and to the Illinois border by early afternoon. It will end
in the east by very early evening, with skies clearing by midnight.
The winds should be light, and with less potential for another
radiation drop compared to the current night, we will still likely
see low in the zero to -10 range.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
ISSUED AT 250 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

Long term period continues to be highlighted by a potentially potent
Arctic clipper system Sunday Night & Monday, with extremely cold
temperatures to follow for mid-next week.

Sunday...

High pressure quickly moves over the area, and will be centered
south of Lake Michigan by evening. Clouds will be on the increase
ahead of our potential winter storm for the next period, which
should help to warm up our temperatures from previous days.
Advertised afternoon highs range from the lower teens along the
Highway 20 corridor, to middle 20s south of Highway 34.

Sunday Night & Monday...

Forecast for this period continues to be tricky as latest models
have taken a different track with this potential winter storm
compared to yesterday.

Shortwave trough will strengthen as it ejects from Saskatchewan into
the central Great Plains Sunday. This shortwave will then follow the
more zonal 300-250 mb flow, taking in east towards the Great Lakes
Monday afternoon. Surface low pressure will develop ahead of it, and
with the aid of a 40-50 kt LLJ will spread strong WAA across the
region, leading to substantial lift and a decent amount of
precipitation across the Midwest.

Latest 00z guidance continues to trend the storm track further north
than previous forecasts. The major outlier right now is the ECMWF,
which takes the storm along I-80. All other models, including the
CMC, GFS, NAM and UKMET take the storm track over northeast IA and
southern WI. Regardless of track, all models are in agreement of the
bulk QPF remaining well ahead of the low track, which keeps it
firmly in the cold air. This gives much of the Highway 20 corridor
snowfall amounts of 4-6 inches.

After collaborating with other NWS offices, decided for this shift
to pull the trigger on a Winter Storm Watch for the Highway 20
corridor (where confidence is higher) from 00z Monday to 00z Tuesday
for the potential for heavy snow. This watch may need to be expanded
per any changes to storm track on later shifts.

Further south, lesser snowfall amounts are likely as warmer air
begins to impact precipitation types. A mix of rain, snow, sleet and
freezing rain will be possible for areas along and south of the I-80
corridor.

Monday Night on...

The cold is on once again!

Once the aforementioned storm passes across the Midwest, an extremely
deep area of low pressure originating from the Arctic will make its
way towards the Great Lakes Tuesday Night and Wednesday. This will
put us well entrained into extremely cold air, where temperatures
will have a hard time getting above zero Tuesday and Wednesday. The
GFS continues to remain the coldest model whereas the ECMWF and
Canadian remain 5-10 Celsius warmer. However, I have noticed the
Dprog/Dt of the mean GEFS output has started to come into better
agreement these past few runs, which increases my confidence.

Regardless, the current forecast has lows for Tuesday & Wednesday
night ranging from around -10 F along and south of Highway 34, to
around -20 F along the Highway 20 corridor. Factoring in a northwest
wind, this would give us wind chills of -40 F or colder! (well into
warning criteria). While temperatures will likely continue to be
adjusted, confidence is increasing of dangerous cold impacting the
region during this time period.

Weatherwise, high pressure will keep us under quiet conditions. Some
models advertise a weak clipper moving across the region Wednesday
afternoon, but look for this to change in later runs.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday Afternoon)
ISSUED AT 1149 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

MVFR to occasional IFR visibilities in light snow will continue
this afternoon, before snow tapers off from west to east by early
evening. Ceilings will be mainly MVFR, with clouds diminishing
this evening and overnight.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Issued at 746 AM CST Sat Jan 26 2019

An ice jam near the confluence of the Rock and Mississippi is
causing sharp rises on the level at Moline. Have issued a flood
warning. Based on past freeze-up jams and flows at Moline, the
best estimate is for a high level around 12.5. However, rapid
fluctuations are possible into next week and cannot discount
higher river levels.

The Wapsipinicon River near DeWitt is now headed down following an
ice jam near the DeWitt gage, but will continue to watch this area
closely.

Continued cold conditions and higher than normal flow will promote
additional ice formation over the coming week, with ice jams
possible on other area rivers.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

Bitterly cold conditions are ongoing this morning with
temperatures between 10 and 20 below zero. Winds thankfully are
calm, but temperatures this cold do bring the threat of frostbite
if you don't prepare for the cold.

Light snow will once again spread over the area this afternoon and
early this evening. Accumulations will be generally less than 1
inch, which could cause snow covered roads.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

Another round of accumulating snow is likely Sunday night through
Monday night. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for our Highway
20 corridor counties, where storm total snowfall amounts of 4-6
inches will be possible. Lesser amounts are expected further south,
where snow will have the potential to mix with sleet, freezing rain
and rain. Additionally, brisk winds and blowing and drifting snow
will also be possible.

Dangerously cold wind chills are expected for much of next week.
The coldest period looks to be Tuesday through Thursday when wind
chill values as low as 35 below to 50 below zero are possible.

Favorable conditions exist on many area rivers for rapid development
of ice, which in turn could cause flooding due to ice jams. This
potential will exist through at least next week.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
