Snow is expected to develop across the area this afternoon and evening, continuing overnight before tapering off Saturday morning. Total snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected, with the higher amounts likely focusing north and west of a line from Mount Carroll, Illinois to Washington, Iowa. Short wave moving through now and the mixed pcpn in our south has
ended, but an area of very light snow or flurries was moving
through our northern counties. Only a dusting at best is expected.
I have let the winter wx advisory expire.
Meanwhile, an area of dense fog was covering portions of our
southern cwa but this is expected to slowly improve as the morning
progresses. I have issued a special weather statement to cover
this situation for now and continue to monitor obs.

Signal for snow across the northern CWA this morning has gotten
stronger, as such have increased the chances for snow across this
area. Some light accumulation, still less than an inch is
possible. No other changes to forecast were made.

Freezing drizzle is ongoing across the area due to a lack of ice
nucleation. The synoptic models were correct in this case
yesterday whereas the CAMs were incorrect with Ptype. Regardless
have expanded the current advisory to the north as reports of fzdz
have been received. This fzdz is associated with an upper level
wave moving across the area. Some freezing fog has also been
reported mainly south of I80 this morning. This wave is expected
to move to the east of the area within a few hours of daybreak. At
this time the threat from an fzdz or snow should end.

Short term will start out with light snow ongoing across the
northern CWA and a mix of fzdz and snow along and south of I80.
Forcing for this should move quickly out of the area before 18z,
ending precip across the area. This should lead to a quiet
remainder of the short term period. After this, the main forecast
concern becomes cloud cover and temperatures. Models have been
horrible at removing the stratus deck across us and today looks to
be no different. Think clouds will hold on into the overnight
again, as such have raised low temps due to the cloud cover.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

With late collaboration, will have to be brief. With ongoing winter
headlines/Advisory for this morning and talking with most
neighboring offices, have decided to hold off on headlines
concerning the Friday afternoon to Saturday system for now and allow
the day shift to assess another round of models and make the call. A
watch initially seems prudent with warning criteria possible and
taking into account some wind threat enhancement later Fri night
into Sat morning.
The Fri-Sat system is a complicated scenario with most models
advertising a pre-phasing scenario acrs the upper Midwest, with the
system coming together more from MS and up the OH RVR valley/central
to northern Appalachians on Sat. Ensemble means support a nod to the
00z ECMWF with QPF and handling, but the 00z GFS not that much
different for our area of the Midwest anyway...a bit slower and a
little higher QPF especially acrs the northwestern third of the DVN
CWA here lead banded/baroclinic snows move in during the afternoon
and intensify by evening. Do see the snow spreading in along and
north of Hwy 30 by early-mid afternoon, as well as another snow
tentacle band into the far southwestern CWA. Then as the mid trof
forcing and upward omega surge(which could be strong) sweeps in from
the west-northwest along with increasing column saturation, the snow
will spread eats and south acrs the rest of the area as Friday
evening progresses. Most of the snow accums occur from 00z-12z Sat.
Some chance of a temporary wintry mix of sleet and possibly freezing
rain in the far southern CWA Friday afternoon and early evening with
elevated WAA push, by dynamically cool back to all snow within a few
hours and will not advertise much mix for now. Bulk of accumulating
snow to move out of the southeastern CWA by mid Sat morning, leaning
toward the ECMWF timing.
As for snow amounts, areas along and north of Hwy 30 west of the MS
RVR may get 1-2 inches by 00z Sat. Increasing liquid to snow ratios
(LSR's) to at least 18:1 north of I80 as Friday night progresses and
into early Sat morning to make for higher amounts in those areas
even as QPF starts to decrease. Cutting to the chase, taking a blend
of 00z GFS and ECWMF QPF but a lean toward ECMWF forcing, placement
and timing, have come up with widespread 4.5 to 6.5 inch amounts CWA-
wide. Again with initial frontogenetical forcing, banding and higher
LSR's, the higher amounts may occur acrs the northwestern third to
half of the DVN CWA, or generally along and north of a line from
Sigourney IA, to east of Cedar Rapids, and to MT Carroll IL where
could see a range from 6-8+ inches by Sat morning. With northeast to
north winds increasing to 15 to 25 MPH with higher gusts later
Friday night into Sat morning, greatly reduced visibilties, drifting
and some blowing snow will enhance the hazard levels. Thus if these
amounts are verified(or even higher), see the eventual need of both
warning and higher end advisories having to be issued for Friday
afternoon through Sat morning or midday.
Both the latest ECMWF and especially the GFS continue to back off
the extreme cold influx down acrs our area anyway for the second
half of the weekend and early next week, as brunt of the real cold
-20 to -28 H85 pool shifts further to the northeast acrs the
northern GRT LKS. But with fresh snow cover, it still will be cold
with low single digits or even a few degrees below zero values
possible both Sunday and Monday mornings in spots. Lighter winds
will still induce biting wind chill values well below zero.
A quick look into next week with a wavy pattern still suggests
varying amounts of cold re-enforcement in between passing waves that
could be snow makers almost every other day in or near the local
area. The models are suggesting that Tuesday may have a significant
winter system in or near the local area.

Widespread IFR/low MVFR cigs/vis through much of this taf cycle.
The exception is KDBQ where VFR conds may occur for a time
tonight, before IFR conds return on Friday morning. Northwest to
north winds this afternoon and tonight, then northeast on Friday.
Wind speeds will be around 10 knots or less. Widespread snow will
begin spreading into eastern Iowa Friday afternoon.
