Another night of records are in the books!
Latest surface analysis depicted a 1032 mb Arctic high centered over
southern IA and northern MO at 2 AM. Skies were clear with light and
variable winds across the region. This, combined with the extremely dry
Arctic air mass, has allowed for another night of broken temperatures
records at climate sites. Moline, IL (Quad Cities) broke its all-time
record low of -28F set back in 1996, with the new value of -29F. In
addition, Moline and Cedar Rapids have already broken their low
temperatures for today (January 31st). While most areas have had
near calm winds much of the night, locations that have seen a 5-10
MPH wind have seen wind chills drop to between -30F and -45F.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

I will let wind chill warnings continue after collaboration with
surrounding offices on headlines, which remain in effect either
until 10 AM or noon depending on location. Despite the warnings in
place, wind chills are not likely to fully immersed into criteria
through the remainder of the headlines at most sites, so will let
the day shift coordinate appropriate cancellations/expirations.
The Arctic high will slowly move east this morning, taking the
brutal cold with it. Despite its departure, temperatures across the
area will not see extremely favorable moderation due to our cold
start and increasing cloud cover. Current forecast has highs
ranging from just below zero along the Highway 20 corridor, to
around 10 degrees over northeast MO and west central IL.
Our next system in the form of an Arctic clipper will arrive this
afternoon, bringing light snow across much of the region. Moisture
with this system is somewhat limited, but the presence of SLRs
around 20:1 will ensure we see snow accumulation. Latest suite of
model guidance shows the best low-level 850 mb frontogenetical
occurring along and east of a line from Waterloo, IA to Macomb, IL,
where snowfall amounts of 1-3 inches of snow are possible. High res
models such as the 00z NAMnest suggest amounts exceeding 4 inches
over portions of far eastern IA and northwest IL along and north of
the I-80 corridor, where higher omegas are focused.
After collaboration, have decided to issue a Winter Weather Advisory
for portions of northwest IL where snowfall accumulations of 2-5
inches will be possible. Outside of the advisory, expect snowfall
amounts around 1-3 inches. The advisory is in effect from noon today
until midnight.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

The transition from bitter cold to mild conditions with fog,
drizzle, and some rain will be well under way by late Friday night.
This mild pattern continues through Monday, before return to more
typical wintry weather and another possible arctic front for mid
week.
Friday, clouds will continue to spread north, with rising
temperatures, but still rather cold conditions in the lower t. to
mid 20s. After an evening low in the teens, rising temperatures will
move in for after Midnight, and by Saturday morning, dewpoint and
temperatures above freezing will advance north over the CWA.
Normally, I'd be thinking dense fog and go cold, but this is a
continuous flow of southerly air, with no convergence, and that may
keep the fog from being very dense. Still, drizzle and fog (dense or
not) are likely for Saturday and Sunday. Road temperatures will
undoubtedly be cold to start Saturday, but with rising dewpoints and
low cloud long wave radiation, the roads should creep up above
freezing during the day Saturday, and with that, it should be
maintained into Saturday night and Sunday as dewpoints continue to
rise.
Models are split on whether a significant rain is possible Sunday
night, with the GFS showing a quarter to half inch, and GEM and EC
staying farther north and mainly very light. This storm is pretty
far off for a short window of rainfall like that to have confidence.
In the end, we have so much snow, the melt could be more of an issue
than rainfall, but only if we melt most of it, otherwise the snow
water will not be released significantly.
Following that system, another low may sweep up over the Midwest for
mid week ahead of another rather strong arctic high pressure. This
snow event could be worth of headlines if the GFS is correct, but
it's certainly a change compared to previous runs of that model. The
EC has a slower solution with more mild air in place, and with that
a possible rain or freezing rain event. Far to out for confidence at
this point.

VFR conditions expected at all TAF sites this morning w/ light winds
and bitterly cold temperatures. By late morning/early afternoon,
conditions will deteriorate to IFR as a Arctic clipper spreads light
accumulating snow across the region. The clipper will exit this
evening, leading to improving CIGs and visibilities overnight. Winds
will be out of the east around 5-10 kts.
