temperatures to plummet into the lower teens and single digits
tonight. A few sites were below zero, including Muscatine at -4 F.
Patchy, localized ground fog has developed but should become less
prevalent as clouds continue to increase over the next few hours.
The leading edge of an arctic front was located from SE Minnesota
to central and southwest Iowa. Behind the front, 35+ mph wind
gusts have already developed.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Very impactful winter weather today and tonight.
A Winter Weather Advisory and a Wind Chill Advisory are in effect
for the entire forecast area. The Wind Chill Watch was replaced
by the Wind Chill Advisory. Please see the headline text for
location specific details (impacts and timing).
Today
The main concern is the arrival of an arctic boundary. The
pressure gradient between a 1040mb high in the Plains and a low
moving through the Great Lakes will create strong winds across
eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. NW winds will gust between 30
and 40 mph leading to significant blowing and drifting of the
fresh 3 to 8 inches of dry snow that fell the past few days. The
primary impacts will be localized near whiteout conditions in
rural areas and significant drifting, which could result in some
roads becoming impassable due to drifts of several feet deep.
Again, the impacts will be much worse in rural and open areas
compared to cities/towns. We will be closely monitoring
conditions upstream into central Iowa, and as they develop
locally, for a possible upgrade to warnings (winter storm or
blizzard). At this time, we are well coordinated with surrounding
WFOs and have been messaging significant impacts in the advisory.
HRRR/RAP/GFS 925mb winds are forecast around 40 kts this afternoon
and evening. Forecast soundings show boundary layer mixing up to
~900mb. So we should have no trouble tapping into this momentum
and bringing it down to the surface. NAM 3 hr isallobaric
pressure tendency forecasts are near +4mb, increasing confidence
for sustained winds near 25 mph at times and the higher
aforementioned gusts. Also, don't think conditions will improve
until tonight when winds finally begin to diminish. For that
reason, extended the Winter Weather Advisory until 9 PM.
Dangerous wind chills of -20 to -30 F are expected from the late
afternoon into Friday morning, which is solidly into advisory
criteria.
One reason we held off on issuing a warning for parts of
the CWA is because winds are forecast to be under 10 mph later
tonight which holds minimum wind chill values near or slightly
warmer than -30 F along and north of highway 30 -- just barely
touching warning criteria for a few hours. Either way you slice
it, it's going to be very cold tonight! Forecast lows (ambient

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

Active pattern remains on track throughout the long term with
periodic bouts of impactful winter weather possible.
Friday-Friday night
Bitterly cold wind chills of 20 below to 30 below zero will
linger Friday morning. A fast moving clipper system looks
to bring light snow to much of the CWA by late morning until
early evening. Moisture and forcing are both fairly weak, but
the depth of sounding in the dendritic growth zone will assist
cold snow ratios roughly 20-25:1. Liquid QPF signal is generally
0.1 inch or less, thereby supportive of a fluffy 1-2 inches.
Saturday-Saturday night
In general the area will see high pressure slide off and weak
warm advection develop ahead of another clipper system.
Considerable uncertainty with the amount of moisture
available and saturation in the WAA, and with the track of the
clipper for Saturday night lends to just small chances for light
snow right now.
Sunday-Monday
Models remain consistent on a fairly potent clipper system
likely to impact the Midwest. This has the potential to bring
several inches of accumulation and strong gusty winds with blowing/
drifting snow concerns. Forecast consensus places the highest
PoPs and best potential for 4+ inches mainly north of I-80, but
there remains considerable uncertainty in the track. Thus, main
message is this period harbors potential for high impact winter
weather but confidence in details is low. Therefore encourage
everyone to stay tuned, as details of amounts/location, etc. are most
certain to change and become better refined in later forecasts.
Tuesday-Wednesday
In the wake of this system, the deterministic models and ensembles
are indicating potential for an even colder surge of arctic air.
However, as with this most recent arctic outbreak the models
initially were very aggressive on magnitude of cold and then backed
off some, and can't rule out the same occurring here. Although,
between now and then likely to add a bit to snow cover here and
upstream. Regardless if the magnitude of the cold is far from certain,
what is fairly high confidence is well below normal temperatures
during this period.

Strong arctic front is now east of the Mississippi and will
continue moving east into the Ohio Valley. Winds gusting up to 35
kts behind the front will create considerable low level
mechanical turbulence along with blowing snow. MVFR conditions
will slowly improve to VFR through 03z/25 as high pressure moves
through the Midwest. After 15z/25 the next storm system will
begin moving into eastern Iowa. VFR conditions will quickly
deteriorate to MVFR and likely IFR conditions in snow by/after
18z/25.

Conditions will become very favorable for ice development along area
rivers over the next week. A cold arctic airmass will bring average
daily surface temperatures below 10 degrees F for much of the next
week. These cold temperatures, combined with higher than normal
river flows, and water temperatures nearing the freezing mark will
promote rapid ice growth. When these conditions occur, there is also
a high risk for ice jams, and then a potential for flooding
associated with backwater from these jams. The Rock River in
Illinois is one river we are watching closely as it has the highest
concern for flooding due to ice jams, but numerous other rivers will
also have similar conditions so would have a high threat as well.
While conditions are favorable for the development of freeze-up
jams, they are still very unpredictable, in both occurrence and
severity. Also of note, river level rises due to ice jams may not be
tied to a river gage.

There is a high risk for hazardous extreme cold for much of
the Midwest, including the DVN cwa. The Climate Prediction Center
has a 90% probability of well below normal temperatures. Historic
(record) cold is likely during this period. There will be a
highly amplified trough centered over Hudson Bay with a cross-
polar flow. Beyond this time period the upper level flow should
transition to more zonal, allowing for a slow moderation of the
cold.
