...Strong low pressure leading to widespread gales today with
easterly storm force gusts over northern Lake Huron...

.Wind gusts and wave heights to quickly ramp up through the morning 
hours as a strong low pressure system builds in across the Midwest, 
settling over northern lower Michigan by late Wednesday morning.  
While the strongest gusts are expected to reside across northern 
Lake Huron with storm force gusts certainly in play, an expansive
low-level wind field associated with the approaching low will 
ensure gale force winds will be seen across all marine areas. A 
gale warning remains in effect for the remaining marine zones. 
Additionally, strong winds will result in high wave action across 
Lake Huron, with significant waves ranging between 12 to 15 feet, 
max waves up to 19 feet. Last, widespread rain with some rumbles 
of thunder is expected through the morning hours, with shower 
activity becoming more isolated to scattered through the afternoon
and evening as a cold front starts to work its way across the 
Great Lakes.

Major change to this forecast update is the upgrade to a storm 
warning across northern Lake Huron as confidence continues to climb 
regrading the high possibility of seeing gusts around 50 knots 
during the morning hours. While the strongest gusts are expected to 
reside across northern Lake Huron, an expansive low-level wind field 
associated with the approaching low will ensure gale force winds 
will be seen across all marine areas. A gale warning remains in 
effect for the remaining marine zones. Additionally, strong winds 
will result in high wave action across Lake Huron, with significant 
waves ranging between 12 to 15 feet, max waves up to 19 feet. Last, 
widespread rain with some rumbles of thunder is expected through the

.AVIATION...

Low pressure developing over Kansas deepens rapidly while moving
toward Milwaukee by sunrise Wednesday. The system has a warm front
extending eastward through northern Indiana and Ohio which is drawn
northward into Lower Michigan during the night while focusing rain
showers along and north across SE Michigan. These trends produce a
steady lowering of flight conditions beginning with MVFR by or
shortly after midnight then falling quickly to IFR with widespread
rain showers and increasing E-SE wind. Expect IFR to hold until the
associated cold front surges west to east across Lower Michigan and
through the terminal corridor around 15Z. Wind then becomes the
primary impact shifting SW and gusting near 40 kts through the
afternoon while MVFR ceiling becomes established again after early
breaks in both clouds and showers. Any lingering precipitation
remains as rain showers until after sunset Wednesday evening and then
just scattered coverage of snow showers while the wind remains gusty
from the west.

For DTW...A few patches of light rain and low end VFR ceiling
precede development of MVFR and increasing coverage/intensity of
rain showers during the evening. IFR develops quickly after midnight
with widespread rain showers which hold until a strong cold front
passes toward late Wednesday morning. Passage of the front brings
ceiling improvement while SW wind reaches gusts near 40 knots through
Wednesday afternoon.

DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* High for ceiling  below 5000 ft tonight and Wednesday.

* High for all rain as precipitation type.

* Moderate for crosswind exceeding 30 knots from 260-290 Wednesday
  evening.

DISCUSSION...

Dynamic closed mid level circulation currently ejecting into the
central plains on pace to accelerate northeast and through the lower
peninsula over the next 24 hours. Deep layer northward moisture
transport lodged within a strengthening southerly flow fixated along
the immediate eastern flank of this system will aggressively enter
the region tonight. Potential for some lead pockets of lighter
showers during the evening period as modest isentropic ascent works
to saturate the column. The incremental uptick in warm/moist
advection within the background of large scale height falls/dcva
will then offer more widespread rainfall overnight. A general
reduction in deep layer stability given the dynamics and high theta-
e content maintains the expectation for some heavier convective
showers/possible thunder to emerge during the early-mid morning
hours. A modest increase in prevailing southeast winds during this
time, but with gust potential capped at 25 knots or less given the
higher degree of near surface stability.

Attendant cold frontal passage commences late morning Wednesday as
as the surface low transits through northern lower mi. This fropa
marked by a brief but pronounced period of isentropic descent,
particularly with southward extent. Mid level dry slot then takes
brief residence into the early afternoon within the immediate post-
frontal environment, before increasing cold air advection within the
underlying mid level cyclonic flow leads to renewed deeper layer
saturation. Capitalizing on the strong resident wind field just off
the surface, this will introduce the initial - and perhaps best -
window for stronger gusts to materialize. A trailing modestly mixed
boundary layer environment sustained by a firm southwest gradient
but muted too some degree by increasing low level moisture concerns
will then maintain a gusty condition through the evening hours. Best
intersection of wind magnitude and mixing potential will exist with
southward extent, worthy of a wind advisory headline for gusts of 40
to 50 mph from the I-69 corridor south.

Secondary window for shower production centered from mid afternoon
through early Wednesday night, owing to a period of stronger mid
level cva/height falls capitalizing on the ongoing cold air
advection and resulting steeper lapse rate environment. Areas
generally along/north of the I-96 corridor better positioned given
placement of the greater ascent and moisture quality toward the
north. The frontal timing ensures early day highs near 50, with
temps then dropping throughout the afternoon and evening. Lowering
freezing levels will then introduce the possibility for a few snow
showers within any heavier convective elements, particularly post-
sunset. A sufficiently warm near surface condition and limited
residence time given the transient/scattered nature of activity
ensures any snow melts on contact.

A dry and stable environment will mark conditions for the
Thanksgiving holiday, governed by lingering mid level confluent flow
transitioning toward a building upper height field. Resident thermal
profile characterized as a touch below normal. Highs upper 30s to
lower 40s within a modest northwest wind. Benign weather conditions
hold through daylight hours Friday, maintained via low level anti-
cyclonic flow tucked beneath general upper ridging.

Another deep mid latitude cyclone will emerge across the plains
during the weekend period. The deepening process will likely occur
farther west with this system, likely leaving an occluding low-mid
level environment upon arrival locally Sunday. Southeast Michigan
favorably positioned again to witness the main moisture surge tied
to the downstream warm air advection component of this system. This
will bring a high likelihood of precipitation within Saturday and
Saturday night window, the onset timing ultimately dictating whether
any precip arrives as snow before ongoing warm air advection
overwhelms the column and ensures an all liquid ptype. Dry slot
trailing the passage of the frontal occlusion may offer a dry period
early Sunday, before arrival of the trailing mid level circulation
establishes an environment potentially conducive to rain/snow shower
development late Sunday/Sunday night.

MARINE...

A relaxed pressure gradient holds across the Great Lakes and will
continue to bring calm to light winds and lower wave heights to the
marine areas for the remainder of the afternoon and early evening.
Otherwise, low pressure currently centered over Kansas as of 4 PM
EST will gradually intensify while pushing northeast, eventually
centering over northern lower Michigan by Wednesday afternoon. A
strong pressure gradient and strong low-level wind field associated
with this low pressure is set to bring gale force winds to all
marine zones. Brief periods of low-end storm force gusts remain
possible mainly confined to northern Lake Huron through Wednesday
morning and Lake Erie to Lake St. Clair through the day.
Additionally, widespread rainfall including embedded heavy showers
will be likely throughout the morning and afternoon as low pressure
travels northeast across Lake Huron. Some rumbles of thunder cannot
be ruled out for any Wednesday morning precipitation. Low pressure
is then forecasted to exit the Great Lakes region early Thursday
morning which will quickly diminish wind speeds as flow switches to
the northwest. Given high confidence to see prolonged periods of
gales, a gale warning is in effect for all marine areas.

HYDROLOGY...

A wet period is in store for Southeast Michigan starting late this
evening and continuing into Wednesday morning. Expectations are for
a widespread rain shield with embedded more intense convective
showers. Rainfall totals will eclipse a half inch across the entire
region with higher totals around inch across the Saginaw Valley.
Localized higher amounts toward an inch are also possible farther
south - but will be tied to more transient embedded convective
showers.
